Buying your electricity from 100% renewable sources is one of the most straightforward and effective ways to reduce your household’s contribution to Climate Change, and a vital step in addressing issues of Peak Oil. Good Energy believes that it is the power of communities that can influence change and has put together a special offer for Transition Town members. Sign up between now and the 15th March and receive £30 off your first bill.

Good Energy is the only supplier in the UK that provides 100% renewable electricity. It buys from over 350 renewable generators across the UK, all run entirely from wind, small-scale hydro, wave, solar power and sustainable biomass.

Switching to Good Energy has never been easier - you can apply online at www.good-energy.co.uk/affinity/qw30t or call 0845 601 1410, quoting QW30t to get your £30 discount.

Viridor Incinerator Update February 23, 2008

Viridor’s incinerator proposal is now officially registered with East Lothian Council and they have also applied to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) for a PPC (Pollution Prevention and Control) permit.

The PPC permit will consider things like the emissions from the plant and its energy efficiency - which under Richard Lochead’s recent ministerial statement must now be at least 60% overall - which means that they will need to show how they are going to productively use 50MW of heat on top of the 34MW of electricity that the plant will produce. The ‘heat plan’ that they have submitted doesn’t actually contain any figures but talks about using the heat for soft fruit growing and a fish farm and even mentions selling heat to Torness, which seems bizarre. See the SEPA website for more information. We only have until the end of February to make representations to SEPA which must be in writing to: The Registrar, SEPA, Clearwater House, Avenue North, Heriott Watt Research Park, Riccarton, Edinburgh, EH14 2PA

Please write as soon as possible!

Also, please do write to East Lothian Council and Dunbar Community Council, see IRATE’s website for more information: www.keepdunnysunny.com.

In addition, there will be a choice of small group sessions exploring issues in greater depth with our principal presenters.

There will also be the chance to explore the Findhorn Foundation ecovillage and to visit many of its ecological design features, including eco-housing, the renewable energy wind park, the Earthshare community-supported agriculture scheme, the Living Machine biological waste treatment system and more.

The course costs £50 for the first day and £25 for the second. For more information, see this flyer.

Big Tent Festival 2008 February 4, 2008

Falkland Palace, Fife Sat 26 - Sun 27 July 2008

The Big Tent Festival is a weekend of celebrations, music, art and creativity which champions the work of the environmental movement and those concerned with the conservation of the living world.

Eva from Transition Town Portobello is organising a Transition Scotland Gathering as part of the Big Tent Festival this summer. The gathering will have two main parts: a meeting of groups who have already begun a Transition Initiative in their area or are on the verge of starting one, and another for anyone who’s interested in the idea more generally. The first bit will be fairly informal: people will be able to share what they’ve been doing, what they see as their next steps, and talk about their successes and the things they’d like help with. The second bit will introduce the Transition Model and then have small discussion groups for people wanting to talk in more depth about particular areas. Both sections will have inspiring speakers (and good biscuits).

Anyone wishing to find out more should contact Eva directly.
