Dyslexia action plan for teachers January 31, 2008

The Scottish Government reports on a Dyslexia Summit hosted by the First Minister and Sir Jackie Stewart in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday 29 January.Dyslexia should not be allowed to limit any child’s success First Minister Alex Salmond said, as the Deans of Scottish Universities involved in Initial Teacher Education agreed a joint action plan to make education more inclusive.
The action plan, agreed at the Dyslexia Summit will see:

- Development of A Framework for Inclusion, setting out the skills, abilities and values required for student teachers and teachers to support pupils with additional support needs
- Development of guidance relating to specific issues such as dyslexia
- Development of teaching materials to support teacher training
- A review of post-graduate opportunities available to reflect the ideas agreed in the Framework for Inclusion
- Improved collaboration between universities.
New signs of the times for deaf learners January 29, 2008

Edinburgh University’s School of Education has developed glossaries for British Sign Language (BSL) covering biology, physics and chemistry.
The school’s Scottish Sensory Centre had already produced more than 80 individual signs for mathematicss in a pilot project. So far, more than 250 words or phrases have been created in response to growing demand from deaf pupils and teachers for a wider scientific vocabulary in the commonly used language.

Posted by Liz Herd in : Training , add a commentAnyone interested in finding out more about what Support For Learning (SFL) teachers do, learning how to develop the skills/strategies they use or maybe even becoming an SFL teacher? If the answer is yes then there are CPD courses coming up soon which could be exactly what you are looking for.
A group of 5 twilight sessions ( on 7/2, 19/2, 27/2, 6/3, 11/3) will cover the following 5 aspects of SFL work:
Direct Teaching- Co-operative Teaching- Consultation- Staff Development- Specialist Services
The sessions will be presented by some of the excellent SFL staff we have in East Lothian. Then, as a follow-up to these sessions, there will an afternoon event, open to all staff, where the presenters will be joined by some more of our excellent SFL teachers to demonstrate and share a range of ideas and resources currently in use.
