Last term the Pupil Council Organised the ‘Food for Life’ event in school. This was a challenge to cook a meal using ingredients with as few food miles as possible.
Here is their report on what they did…
First we discussed what we would need to do. Then we wrote letters to find out what sort food we would be able to use. We wanted to use food from people’s gardens and farms if possible, so that we could make a meal with 0 food miles. We asked the pupils of the school what foods they grew in their gardens or allotments. We designed a form to fill in.
We found out who had what and built up our menu from there. Mrs Smith, the school catering assistant helped us. Our menu was:
Starter
Leek and Potato Soup
Main Course
Smoked Trout on a bed of rosemary
Grilled tomatoes
Potatoes
Carrots, Peas, Beans
Pudding
Fruit Salad
We sent out more letters to the pupils to ask them to bring in the ingredients they had offered.

Ellyn brought leeks, potatoes, carrots, peas, beans and onions.

Emily, Isabel and Thomas brought basil.

Caroline brought raspberries and brambles.
Natalie and Ben brought rosemary, josta berries, raspberries, parsley tomatoes and bay leaves.

Yasmin and Naomi brought apples.

Ms Finlayson brought mint.

Alex, Katie and Holly brought apples and pears.

Ewan and Emma brought trout and strawberries (their mum works at the local fruit and fish farm!)
We invited Mrs O’Mahony, who used to be the Headteacher at Stenton School, to come to dinner with her husband, who runs the bowling club where the school has its summer tournament. Mrs O’Mahony celebrated her 70th birthday this month, so this was an extra celebration for her.
2 parents, Mrs Wilson-Beales and Mrs Lindsay were asked if they could come and help us with the cooking. Mrs Smith wrote out the recipes we would need and brought in some utensils as well.
On the day all of the children helped with the preparation of the meal.

P5,6 and 7 chopped the leeks, potatoes and onions for the soup.
P4 and 5 prepared the vegetables for the main course, and the rosemary and tomatoes to go with the fish.

P1-3 made the fruit salad with help from the pupil council.
The pupil council set the table ready for lunch. Miss Wood, the P4-7 teacher made placemats with pictures from our activity day the day before so that Mr and Mrs O’Mahony could see what we had been doing.

Mr and Mrs O’Mahony arrived for lunch, which was served by Ms Finlayson, the principal teacher, and Mrs Dillin, another teacher.
Everyone enjoyed their lunch, it was very tasty. It was interesting to see how everything tasted without salt, because some people were used to having salt with meals.
Everyone really enjoyed being a part of the Food For Life Challenge. The Pupil Council learned a lot about how to organise something, and everyone else loved making the dishes. Mr and Mrs O’Mahony wrote to us afterwards saying how much they had enjoyed it and how successful it had been.
