Engineering Challenge

November 13th, 2008 by stentonp5

We have been busy making a poster about safety. Everyone drew a safty picture and stuck them on a big pice of paper to make the poster. This is for a competition at Torness Power Station.

We also made a model of a wind generator. It turns the wind into electricity. We might win lots of money and a toy robot.

This is a photo of our model.

Walk to School Week

October 27th, 2008 by stentonp7

Walk to school week started today and everybody walked, also we started shake to wake in the morning which is a morning activity that we do every day, the p7 make up a routine with some music and we will do it for a week. This morning at shake to wake Alex, Caroline and Thomas did the dance to Girls Aloud, grease and Abba, they started with a warm up to Gimme, Gimme, Gimme then had a energetic dance to Girls Aloud and then a cool down to Grease Lightning remix. Everyone enjoyed it as it was great fun but freezing so we had to jump around tons!

We have just started a new topic the sea life and we will be studying different animals this term.

Last Tuesday this robot called Oscar came in and he talked to us about safety and then he told us about a competion we had to design a poster about safety and the school that won would get some money. The other competition was to  build a windmill from k’nex, and the school that won would get a little robot. For the poster everyone is drawing a safety hazard on an A5 sheet of paper, then we’ll join them all up and it will make a huge big poster all about safety!

Cook for Life Challenge

October 23rd, 2008 by notnets

Last term the Pupil Council Organised the ‘Food for Life’ event in school. This was a challenge to cook a meal using ingredients with as few food miles as possible.

Here is their report on what they did…

First we discussed what we would need to do. Then we wrote letters to find out what sort food we would be able to use. We wanted to use food from people’s gardens and farms if possible, so that we could make a meal with 0 food miles. We asked the pupils of the school what foods they grew in their gardens or allotments. We designed a form to fill in.

We found out who had what and built up our menu from there. Mrs Smith, the school catering assistant helped us. Our menu was:

Starter

Leek and Potato Soup

Main Course

Smoked Trout on a bed of rosemary

Grilled tomatoes

Potatoes

Carrots, Peas, Beans

Pudding

Fruit Salad

We sent out more letters to the pupils to ask them to bring in the ingredients they had offered.

Ellyn brought leeks, potatoes, carrots, peas, beans and onions.

Emily, Isabel and Thomas brought basil.

Caroline brought raspberries and brambles.

Natalie and Ben brought rosemary, josta berries, raspberries, parsley tomatoes and bay leaves.

Yasmin and Naomi brought apples.

Ms Finlayson brought mint.

Alex, Katie and Holly brought apples and pears.

Ewan and Emma brought trout and strawberries (their mum works at the local fruit and fish farm!)

We invited Mrs O’Mahony, who used to be the Headteacher at Stenton School, to come to dinner with her husband, who runs the bowling club where the school has its summer tournament. Mrs O’Mahony celebrated her 70th birthday this month, so this was an extra celebration for her.

2 parents, Mrs Wilson-Beales and Mrs Lindsay were asked if they could come and help us with the cooking. Mrs Smith wrote out the recipes we would need and brought in some utensils as well.

On the day all of the children helped with the preparation of the meal.

P5,6 and 7 chopped the leeks, potatoes and onions for the soup.

P4 and 5 prepared the vegetables for the main course, and the rosemary and tomatoes to go with the fish.

P1-3 made the fruit salad with help from the pupil council.

The pupil council set the table ready for lunch. Miss Wood, the P4-7 teacher made placemats with pictures from our activity day the day before so that Mr and Mrs O’Mahony could see what we had been doing.

Mr and Mrs O’Mahony arrived for lunch, which was served by Ms Finlayson, the principal teacher, and Mrs Dillin, another teacher.

Everyone enjoyed their lunch, it was very tasty. It was interesting to see how everything tasted without salt, because some people were used to having salt with meals.

Everyone really enjoyed being a part of the Food For Life Challenge. The Pupil Council learned a lot about how to organise something, and everyone else loved making the dishes. Mr and Mrs O’Mahony wrote to us afterwards saying how much they had enjoyed it and how successful it had been.

Banana Day

October 23rd, 2008 by notnets

At the end of term all of the children and staff at Stenton took part in our ‘banana day’. This was a variety of learning around the theme of bananas . We chose bananas because of the link to our project on The Dominican Republic.

All of the children took part in 5 different activities. Mr Wharton led ‘banana maths’ where they thought about the volume of a banana, and used paper, wheels and axels to make ‘banana buggies’!

Mrs Smith and Ms Finlayson (with a little help from Mrs Dogget!) worked with the children creating their banana splits, and writing their recipes.

With Miss Wood pupils looked at the variety of colours and shades you can see on a banana, and mixed these colours using paint and other media. They then created their own banana pictures showing the progression from green through yellow to black!

With Mrs Dillin the children learned a little about the journey of a banana - where it grows and how it gets to us, and whether the way the income from the sale of the banana is shared equally among all the people who take part in getting it to us. This is a useful introduction to global citizenship for young children.

Outside, the children made up different games involving the word banana!

The next day we all dressed in banana coloured clothes and made a collection for charity. The money will go towards our sponsorship of Josue, in the Domincan Republic.

Robots

October 22nd, 2008 by stentonp1

This week we went to the hall in Stenton Village and talked about safety with a robot!  The robot spoke to us and it said peoples names and it said that we could win prizes if we make safety posters.  We are going to make these posters of safety things in the classroom. The robot was very big and it moved and it kicked Naomi!  The robot is coming back to see us soon in the hall again.
