Veginvasion

March 18th, 2008 by notnets

2 weeks ago the whole school took part in the VEGINVASION - a selection of fresh vegetables provided by East Lothian Council for children to taste. Many children did not like a lot of a vegetables, however the Cucumber, Carrot, Sugar Snap Peas and Sweet Peppers were very popular.
We are hoping that the Crunchy Carrot - the organic shop which supplies our free fruit - will be able to supply some vegetables as well sometimes.

Ms Finlayson was at a conference last week and had a vegetable platter during lunch. The eco committee were very pleased when she brougt back a full platter to school for them to try.

The committee felt that the presentation of the items, and the dip that was with them, made them want to eat it more than if it was served on the blue school dinners trays.

It was decided that the committee would like to provide vegetables and fruit, presented in this way, at least once a week to the rest of the school, and also promote the idea in other schools.

At the beginning of next term the committee will write to the healthy schools co-ordinator and ask their advice about sourcing serving trays with compartments (similar to those in the above picture) and making them available to all schools. Members of the committee will also look at availability of these until the next meeting.

A letter will also be sent to the Crunchy Carrot to ask if the can provide a specific selection of vegetables as well as fruit.

If the campaign is successful in Stenton School and more children eat fruit and vegetables, the eco-committee will promote it in other schools, using posters and photographs, and possibly a short film.

Eco-Committee Healthy Eating Surveys

March 18th, 2008 by notnets

The Eco-Committee did a survey on the foods the children were eating in school. Here are the results of the survey.

The committee felt that people were eating a lot of biscuits, and not that much fruit. Hardly anyone was eating vegtables. Also, lots of people were not drinking any water during the school day.

The committee spoke to pupils at assembly, showing them the results of the survey, and encouraging them to eat more healthily during the school day.
