Barry Smith - Learning about Learning

A-for-ALPs Day……

February 15th, 2007 · 5 Comments

….is tomorrow!  We have our induction tomorrow and it looks like everything is in place for the start of the programme.  We’ve had a couple of last minute issues with students, but that is the nature of things, so we will be starting with a slightly reduced group size, but hopefully will be back up to full strength in the next week or so.

I’m actually ridiculously excited. I’ve been thinking tonight about the number of hours that a great number of people have given to the project before it has started, it is fantastic.  All those 7.30am meetings since back in October, and only a fruit scone, croissant and a coffee induced headache to show for it!

The work will continue as the programme progresses, we are already considering how we can further integrate or ‘mainstream’ this kind of provision to give opportunities to a larger cohort.  I’m particularly excited about teaching our thinking skills course, I believe the potential benefits are enormous and will be keeping my blog updated with the progress.

I’ve produced a short ‘welcome’ powerpoint presentation for students, parents, staff, mentors and guests who will be coming tomorrow.  It can be accessed below, but I stress it’s short!

[...] Today at the ALPS induction meeting for students and staff, we ran a short training session to get staff started on using the WordPress system that’s behind this ALPS site. [...]

Enjoyed reading the powerpoint - How are you going to judge the successof the programme?

Measures of success will be reduced detention/exclusion rates for those involved and improved attendance(if that is an issue). In addition, after year one each youngster will have:

completed level 1 of the John Muir Award
completed RYA sailing level 1 award
completed the kayaking/canoeing 1 star award
undertaken a selection of outdoor education activities designed by Telford college to allow progression to the Junior Sports Leader award in S4 if appropriate.
completed two terms of a thinking skills course.

At the end of year two, each youngster will have:

had an opportunity to undertake at least one work placement in an area of interest to them.
had significant input from the school careers adviser in relation to their destination beyond S4(Employment, education or training)
chosen a career path beyond S4(Employment, education or training)
every youngster will have evidence of an Extreme Learning project and details of the process and progress through their learning log. Evidence of self, peer, staff, family assessment and assessment by other interested parties.

From a qualitative point of view, youngsters will be able to describe and give personal examples of looking at situations from more than one perspective and how this can affect their decision-making. This may be evidenced by refelection in the learning log as well as interviews with the young people and significant others eg. peers, staff, family.

Barry - I like it - and particularly that there’s no specific mention of how many Standard Grades they might get at the end of S4, of course that might be a spin-off, but not the goal.

Yes, good performance in the other six standard grades would be a welcome spin-off, but the focus is more on personal development and skills for life and work.
