It’s All Change May 14, 2009
Posted by kaffleck in : News , add a commentAfter much hard work and planning we are delighted to annouce that we are about to open our new Get Ready for Work provision. As part of that we have now got a new name. Gone is the old Shed Vocational Centre and in its place rises East Lothian Skill Centre! (Well, sort of!!)
The building and location are the same but the first floor of the building has been refurbished and will now house our Get Ready for Work unit for young people aged 16 - 19yrs. The vocational unit will remain on the ground floor.
This venture is a partnership between ourselves and Midlothian Training Services (MTS) and will help to fill a long-identified gap ie the need for more training places for young people based in East Lothian itself. The first steps have been taken as Careers Scotland are currently advertising the vacancies we have and identifying young people who might want to take part.
What does Get Ready for Work involve?
The programme can last for up to 26 weeks, and participants will firstly undertake a two-week induction here at the Skill Centre before being placed with an employer for 3 days per week. They will also return to the Skill Centre each Thursday and Friday where they will work towards qualifications. All participants will receive a weekly allowance, be eligible for a weekly attendance bonus and also will be re-imbursed any travel expenses in excess of £3.00 per week.
How do you get a place?
Anyone interested in taking part should contact their local Careers Office and say they are interested in MTS at East Lothian Skill Centre.
GIRLS ALLOWED December 15, 2008
Posted by kaffleck in : Uncategorized , 1 comment so farGirls Allowed (see the Student section) had their Induction morning today at the Shed. Participants met each other for the first time and were introduced to the tutors and course facilitators who are running the course next term. We will have regular updates on the progress of the course and intend to take lots of photos for you to see. We will be having a special performance at the end of the course so that the girls can show off all the new moves they have learned. I am looking forward to seeing how Kathleen and Karen the two facilitators get on and whether or not they, too, have a part in that final performance. I shall have the camera ready!

Girls Allowed November 19, 2008
Posted by kaffleck in : Courses , add a commentWe are currently recruiting in all six secondary schools for our new Girls Allowed Course. Kathleen and Karen are visiting each of the schools to interview applicants and competition is fierce to take advantage of this opportunity. We have had 28 applicants in total for a course with a maximum of 15 places. It is a pity we will not be able to take everyone but if the pilot is successful we will be running it again next session.

Our S4 Childcare Group had an afternoon of making halloween masks and trying to eat doughnuts hanging from string. It was a messy afternoon but all the girls enjoyed it.
