On Tuesday,  I spent the day with a group of like minded staff who had given up their time to focus on their teaching practice and become enterprising leaders in their own classrooms.

The main aim of this two day course is to encourage the spirit of enterprising leadership and create an enterprising approach to teaching and learning in their classroom.  The course itself makes connections between Enterprise, A Curriculum for Excellence and Assessment is for Learning.  This was something that was central to a lot of the discussion throughout the day.

Staff were able to identify and focus on their own leadership styles and relate this to how they can move forward the enterprise agenda in their own classrooms.  One of the ideas we discussed as a group was that if we want children to have a can do will do approach then our behaviour must miror that and we need to give young people the opportunity to take risks and lead in their own learning.

We focused on what makes an enterprising school and gave staff the opportunity to reflect and share on their own practice.  It was evident that everyone who attended on the day had a good understanding and were already enterprising leaders in their own right.  The challenge for them was to put this into practice with others in their schools but also to try out some new ideas.

This was the task the group have been set before coming back on 22 March.  They were to identify an lesson or topic they would be delivering and look at ways to make this more real and relevant for their young people.  After this has been taught, the group will feedback on the impact this had on them as learners but also on the children themselves.  Details of this will be published in due course.

This was an excellent course. Everyone seemed to enjoy the active tasks and the opportunity to rethink how we teach our lessons. I have definitely been inspired to be more enterprising in my lesson planning and I know a colleague felt the same way. Excellent delivery Scott, you were intune with your participants. Looking forward to the next session, can’t wait to experience the cheese savoury sandwiches once again!
