“What’s New?” Project
Throughout January and February 2008 the pupils of P7W and P7T worked with podcast artist John Harris, their teachers Lynne Welsh and Karen Thomson, and theatre practitioners Clare Stewart and Ashley Taylor, to create a new series of podcast episodes called “What’s New?”. These take a look at the industrial history of Tranent and its surrounding area, in particular its mining heritage.
Pupils from Primary 7 with John Harris
The pupils undertook a huge amount of background research to gather the material for the podcasts, including visiting the Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum, interviewing residents at the Fa’side Lodge Residential Home and extensive online research.
To make the podcasts themselves, the pupils learnt how to make sound recordings, conduct interviews with local people, write their own radio scripts, record their own voiceovers and introductions, edit sound using computers, and even write and mix their own background and intro music!
Many of the podcasts feature interviews with local people, including a local miner now resident in Fa’side Lodge, Tranent.
The pupils also created new art for their classrooms and for the podcasts, and made short drama pieces for presentation within school, exploring and illustrating some of the issues they found through their research.
