Fire Safety Week and more!

We thought it would be good to put some of our Health Week Diary pages onto the blog. I liked the page where we had to say what we were good at in gym.

I think my best skill is underarm sliding.  The fruit tasting was also fun and my favourite fruit was plums.  My best activitity of the whole week was the hockey.  Euan

This week was  Fire Safety Week in our school and we had visitors from the Fire Service.  talk-2.jpg   Miss Robertson told us about hazards and showed us some pictures.  We had to say what the hazards were.  talk-1.jpg  Then we watched a video of Fireman Sam sorting out someone who had too many plugs in a socket.  This could make a fire and is very dangerous.  Next I got to make a pretend 999 phonecall because there was a fire in my house.  I had to give my address clearly so that the fire engine knew where to go.  talk-3.jpg  Lastly we were reminded about checking smoke alarms and our teacher said we could pester our mum or dad to check that our smoke alarms batteries at home were working.  When I got home my mum checked our one and it was ok.  We each got a book about Frances the Firefly - who played with matches, a Fireman Sam colouring-in book, a big picture of firemen putting out a house fire to colour in and a leaflet reminder about checking smoke alarm batteries.  I liked making the pretend phonecall best.  Saffron

Our extra PE this week with Mr Tangey and Mr Sutherland was football and we were able to go outside as it was a sunny day.  For our warm-up we had to jog inside a coned area.  Then we had to find a partner and get one football to share.  footie-1.jpg   Number 1 person had to dribble the ball keeping the it beside them because if you let the ball go too far  footie-2.jpg   in front someone else might take it.   footie-4.jpg   Number two person had to follow them until Mr Sutherland  shouted change.      The number one had to trap the ball and number two took over and dribbled.  You had to trap the ball with your foot, touch it with your head and even sit on it!  Then we went into staions - running, dribbling and throwing and catching the bean bag.     It was great being outside in the sun.  John

On Wednesday the firemen came back and this time they brought their fire engine.  It was big and shiny red with ladders on the top.  The driver put on the flashing lights and sounded the siren and we got to sit in the cab.  Another fireman showed us some of the equipment.  We saw a machine that can see through walls and in the dark.  One fireman had all his special clothes on.  They were thick and yellow and protected him from the flames and heat.  He had an air tank on his back like a diver.

Best thing was we all got a shot of the big hose.  It was very hard to pull the handle back to make the water come out.  I put the hose on the big plant tyre but only the fireman could make it reach the roof.  The playground was soaking wet!!  John in our class was nearly lying down to pull the handle.  I would have liked another shot of the hose.  Coll

This week at Eco-Defenders Mrs Gardyne gave each of us a special pencil.  pencil-1.jpg   It just looks like an ordinary pencil,   pencil-2.jpg    but it has been made from re-cycled CD cases.  I took the pencil back to my classroom and told everyone about it.       It writes just like an ordinary pencil.  Craig

For Show and Tell this week I showed some of my baby sister Mya’s first clothes.  She is now one year old but only weighed 2lbs 7oz when she was born.  I showed her hat, her babygro and her special dummy.   baby-1.jpg   I told everyone she was three months early and had to stay in an incubator in the hospital until she was bigger.  Mya was so small she could fit into my mum’s hand.  My teacher couldn’t believe how tiny her clothes were!!  Renee

For my Show and Tell I brought my YuGiOh cards.   cards-1.jpg    You do duals and trade with them.  My best card is Shield and Sword.  I use my pocket money to buy cards and if I have the new cards already I trade them with my friends.  I keep my cards safely at home.  Dillon

CLASS NEWS

My family got a new car this week.  It is a blue Vectra and it can take five people.  I really like it.  Chanelle

I went to see Riverdance at the weekend with my mum, my dad and my sister.  It was in the Playhouse in Edinburgh.  The funniest bit was when one of the dancers slid all the way across the stage, then everyone else came on and started teasing him.  The music was great and I was clapping my hands and stamping my feet.  Shawnisay

My family got a new car too.  It’s a black one with a drink pop out bit at the bottom.  You just push it in and then you can put your drink in it.   There’s also a pocket on the back of the front seats where you can put your toys.  Craig

I have a new pet.  It’s a white hamster and I have called it Fluffy.  It has a special cage and I keep it in my room.  Kelly

I have a new pet too.  It’s a little kitten and it’s two months old.  Her name is Gem and she is grey and white.  She sleeps in a little bed in my mum’s room and I might be getting another kitten.  Leah

My mum is going to have a baby in August.  I have a little sister just now but I don’t mind if the new baby is a girl or a boy.  Chloe

What an interesting week! The Prestonpans Infant & Nursery School blog is one of my favourites.

I think fire safety is an extremely important role in a child’s development. Alex’s grandfather was a fireman, stationed in Musselburgh, and brought many horrible stories home through lack of knowledge on how fire spreads so quickly through a house.

Wasn’t it good of the firefighter to let you try using the hose? It looked great fun! I wonder how many children found they needed to get new batteries for their smoke alarms? Maybe you could find out?
North Berwick Nursery School are just getting started with an eduBuzz website, but there’s only one post there just now. Maybe over the next few weeks you’ll be able to see what they’re doing, and tell them what you think?

Lots of exciting things have again been happening in P2/5! That’s great news about your new baby Chloe. I am sure that you will be a good help to your mum when your brother or sister arrives. I could not believe how small Mya’s clothes were Renee. I am sure she is growing up to be a big girl now. New pets and new cars…….what a lucky bunch! I am glad you liked Riverdance Shawnisay. I loved the music and the dancing too. Their feet moved so quickly that I could not follow the steps. I did try when I got home but Mr Kettell just laughed and said I should maybe just stick to being a teacher! Looking forward to hearing more of your news.
