Week beginning February 8th 2010…

This week on the ELP Programme we will be working hard in the count down to the half term holiday! More information about some of the exciting activities are detailed below.

Firstly, however, we have some important information about Friday morning. This Friday will be a Dress Down Day in aid of the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Fund. The usual £1 to take part applies and the pupils should bring their money with them to registration. In addition to this, the S6 pupils are selling Valentine flowers and chocolates (prices range between £2-5) and these can be delivered to the person of your choice during the morning on Friday. Again, this initiative is supporting charity. Orders for chocolates or flowers can be placed between now and Thursday. Any ELP pupil wishing to take part should see an SfL teacher.

Elsewhere this week on the ELP Programme…

ELP HE

In ELP HE this week we will be planning for our ‘Best Lunch Ever’. This is an event to be held next month and involves us cooking a lunch for our favourite teachers and staff. We will be doing a lot of the cooking ourselves and will be acting as waiters as well. It is going to be a big challenge but we are very much looking forward to it - and we won’t let anyone down. In the next week we will be visiting the teacher we are cooking for and asking them questions about the food they like. Already we know that Dr Voge loves Pea Soup and will “eat anything!”. Scabby donkey it is then. Yum!

ELP Art

The theme of Venetian masks continues under the umbrella of the whole school project “Italy”. We began making animal based masks last week and will be looking to add some exotic prints and markings to them in the lessons to come.

ELP Science

This week in Science our Health and Technology discoveries continue as we take a look at energy balance and BMI. We will be using everyday foods to explore how much energy we take in - and compare that to the energy we might be using up. What happens if we don’t get the balance right?

In Junior ELP Science, under the ELP Junior umbrella theme ‘East Lothian - our environment’, we will be continuing our look at the various modes of transport (and energy) that are used when crossing the River Forth. Last week we discovered there were many ways to travel from East Lothian to Fife. We also discovered they use a number of types of energy. This week we will be concentrating on one route only - the Forth Road and Rail Bridge. We will be discovering how important the tirangle shape is to the construction of these bridges…and building our own models with no more than straws and cellotape.

ELP Health

This week we will be looking at emotions again. This time we will be exploring the kind of things that can make us sad…and how we can do our best to manage the times we do feel a bit down in the dumps.

ELP Gardening

Under the umbrella theme ‘East Lothian - our environment’ we will soon be planning another trip to a garden centre next term and will be looking forward to this event in the classroom in the coming weeks. What is sold in a garden centre? Where do we find any of our local garden centres? What could we look for when we visit one?

Have a great half term holiday! Enjoy a well earned rest and we look forward to seeing you all again in a week’s time!
