The ELP science class has this week been looking at how we can promote the idea of looking after our bodies in order to keep them healthy and fit - to other people.
We have so far looked at how
- there are 5 main food groups
- we need to eat them in a reasonable balance to give our bodies what they need
- these groups are carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, protein sources (meat, fish and beans), dairy products and “treats”
- we have discovered that we need a bigger amount of fruit and vegetables and carbohydrates
- we have talked about why “treats” are just fine and dandy - but maybe not every day
Having made our classroom mobiles illustrating the five main food groups, we decided that we perhaps needed to consider if we could pass on all that we have learned to other pupils. To that end, we have been working on making up something called ”public health information posters”. These are the kind of posters you might see at the dentist, doctor or in school.
Here are a few examples, so you know what we mean…

This poster is displayed in doctors’ surgeries.

This picture is shown in maternity units where pregnant women go for health care.

Here is one that was used many years ago by the National Health Service! Can you see what is different about it? Can you see any similarities to those we see today?
We have been thinking long and hard about what makes a good poster:-
- it should be colourful so that you see it
- it should be simple so that you understand it
- it should have a title
- it might have a “slogan” like “5 a day”
- it should have pictures and not too many words
With this in mind we are now working on our own Preston Lodge ELP Public Service Information Posters - which we will try to scan and have displayed on PLTV (with a bit of luck!)

Thanks to Dale, Melissa, Amy and Steven. Your poster outside my room is brilliant! It has made me think about keeping healthy. It does not look too difficult to be a little bit more healthy. A few wee changes here and there.
My register class will find this really helpful.
Thank you!
I’m off to buy a pineapple and a trampoline.
