What is Fairtrade?

what-is-fairtrade

Next week in ELP Social Studies we will be looking more closely at growing food in the Third World, why their food is so expensive for them to buy and what can be done to help. We have already begun looking at the charity work of the Eden Project and “The Garden for Life” in Kenya but we will be expanding that to include an investigation of Fairtrade.

  • What does Fairtrade mean?
  • Where can we buy Fairtrade food and drinks?
  • What sort of food and drink is sold under the Fairtrade system?
  • Which shops in the UK stock Fairtrade goods?

We will be taking another trip to the local Scotmid after the school holidays to find out how many different Fairtrade items they sell. By linking our Social Studies lessons on the world food crisis with our Maths lessons on shopping, our Gardening lessons on growing your own food and our Science lessons on a plant physiology , we hope to help the children gain precious life skills, a sense of being part of a bigger world community but also help them link all the different threads together a little bit…
