Shopping “till” we dropped!

Miss Balsillie and Mrs Binnie were really delighted with the way the pupils undertook their maths lesson shopping trip challenge on Thursday October the 1st! We visited the local Scotmid armed with a questionnaire that asked us to find the prices of certain items varying from a coconut to a packet of crisps! We had great fun finding the right aisles, checking the prices and writing down important numbers and names.

We discovered that peppers were half price, that the cheapest thing in the shop was 5p and that you could buy fruit in pre-packed bags as well as individually. We literally shopped until we dropped - we spent almost an hour researching our local shop, it’s stock and prices.

Our teachers then gave us 10p each to spend and we had to carefully look for something that would not cost more than this amount - it was not easy and we had to be careful to manage our tight budget! By checking the prices on things we thought might be good to buy we could tell whether we could afford it or not.

Mrs Binnie then asked one of us to find the price of a coconut and locate them in the shop. We discovered that they were only 69p. As we are looking at growing food in hot countries as part of our Social Studies lessons, Mrs Binnie decided to buy the coconut so that we could investigate what was inside it, where it came from and where does it grow?

One of us suggested we could make “horse hooves” out of it too!

Follow the link at the top of the page to find out all about the things we went looking for in Scotmid. We spent today’s maths lesson going through the information and ordering the goods in terms of their price from lowest to highest - and from highest to lowest. We used coins to make up the amounts we would have needed to use to buy them - breaking down those prices into tens and units. For example, in looking at how we might count out 23p, we found the coins that make 3p first and then added a coin that was worth 20p.

Attched also please find a copy of the worksheet that will be coming home - a challenge for the October break! Your child will also be given some shop leaflets that advertise the latest prices. They need these for the challenge.

Good luck!
