Dissecting our tulips

What is a plant worksheet

This term we have made an excellent start on our ten week project “The Life of Preston Lodge Plants”.

The children have transported their Weather Board to another part of Ms Cleland’s lab in order that we may create a new learning map display of our work, learning outcomes and ideas. See the attached file at top of the page for photos…

In the first week we played at being Plant Investigators.

Each one of us was given -

  • a tulip
  • a white tile
  • forceps

We were shown by Ms Cleland how to dissect the tulip and seperate the different parts of the flower out onto the tile. It was a tricky and finicky job but we really enjoyed it and we discovered an awful lot about flowers.

Here is the inside of a tulip. Photographs of us dissecting our flowers can be found via a link at the top of this page.

Our teachers helped us name the different parts of the flower. We drew a simple version of the diagram above in our workbooks. We didn’t worry too much about all the big fancy names but we did learn how the flower has a “male part” and a “female” part - and the role Bees play in helping the plant make new flowers!

We also worked together on the worksheet attached at the top of this page. Once we had completed the task we then transfered this information onto our Learning Board (photo to follow) where we have a picture of a giant flower.

In the coming weeks we will be growing strawberries, sunflowers, tomatoes and other plants. We will also be learning about uses of plants, needs of plants, functions of plants and development of plants.

Watch this space for some great photographs and interesting science!
