Designing our weather vane…
Making and testing our anemometer…
Barometer construction file
Wind vane construction file
Rain gauge construction file

Over the spring term the pupils on the Enhanced Learning Programme will be making their own weather station. This will be used to record weather observations and patterns in the school garden between January and Easter.
The results will form part of our display for the One Our Doorstep open day and will also be used in sending information to America as part of our ELPs USA project. In return we will be finding out something about the weather in Akron, Ohio.
The weather station has had to be constructed from scratch and - with the environment and recycling firmly in mind - we have decided it should be constructed from recycled household objects. The other benefit of recycling waste for this project is that the children see how easy it is to undertake something like this at home - there really is nothing to stop them setting up a weather station in their back gardens!
The linked files at the top of the page show exactly how the children have gone about setting up their weather station from the beginning. They have been making a wind vane to measure wind direction, a rain gauge to collect rainfall and a barometer to measure the air pressure (which is an indicator of how nice it might be outside). In addition, we hope to move on to make a cloud gauge - to catch cloud water! - to see how cloudy it is at Preston Lodge. That little treat will be recorded later…
Finally, in the weeks to come you will find out more about our plans to make a weather forecast broadcast on video. Using I Can Animate @ we hope to produce our own CDs before the end of term - so everyone can find out about Preston Lodge weather!
Watch this space for details as things progress through the term…
In the meantime you can find more information about how we have introduced this project to the pupils by clicking on our Heather the Weather link (ELP Science, October 22nd posting).
