The Number 26 bus…

The No26 Bus

The Number 26 bus runs from the West of Edinburgh to either Port Seton or Tranent. Regardless of the end destination, it passes through Prestonpans.

When considering how we might incorporate the teaching of maths into our Enhanced Learning Program we felt that it was important to relate numbers to our everyday lives in East Lothian. We prepared a pinboard in our maths class where we could post examples of East Lothian linking into numbers we might find on our simple classroom numberline…

The very first thing we came up with as a class was the Number 26 bus.

The Number 26 bus has since played an important role in the development of both our number work and other maths areas. This has included:

  • Using a picture of the Number 26 bus on our lovely illustrated numberline

  • Looking at the timetable of the Number 26 bus (Time related lessons)

  • Investigating how much it would cost to ride on the Number 26 bus to an Aquarium shop in Edinburgh to buy some friends for our fish, Fingers (Money)

  • Counting the number of passengers that might be on board the Number 26 bus at any given time (Basic numeracy)

  • Counting the windows and doors on a Number 26 bus (Basic numeracy)

  • Counting the number of stops between Preston Lodge and the Aquarium shop

  • Working out how long it takes to get to the Aquarium shop both by our own real life measurement and by the theoretical estimate based on the LRT timetable (Time)

The Number 26 bus looks like being here to stay in ELP maths!
