Senior Rugby Report - September ‘08

The Preston Lodge seniors have restored some pride in Preston Lodge High School rugby this month.

For several years rugby has been strong in the junior school but the senior school has struggled to put together a team. This season the seniors led by team captain Dale Gordon have managed to put in two fantastic performances already.

The team is a mixture of boys playing colts rugby for Haddington and Preston Lodge as well as some of the boys in 4th year who played in the Scottish bowl final last year. Along with these players there is also a few ‘old hands’ who have not played for a few years and have decided to represent the school in their 6th year.

In the 1st round of the cup the team saw off a West Edinburgh district side by 27 points to 7. The boys surprised themselves by the level of rugby they played and the opposition coaches were very impressed with some of the individual performances, notably Dale Gordon, Kier Blackwood, Philip Smith and Glen Muir.

In round 2 the team took on local rivals Ross High, a team with a strong colts side and a very good record. The final score was Preston Lodge 8 Ross High 14, but anybody who watched the match would know that the levels of courage and pride that the seniors demonstrated were incredible.

Hopefully this is only the beginning for this team, with more numbers at training the levels of effort on the pitch can be matched with more structure and control, if this happens, the seniors could find themselves on a cup run to Murrayfield!
