S3s march on to the semi finals of the Bell Lawrie bowlMatch-Reports
PL has a convincing victory to reach the semi - final
Preston Lodge High School’s third year team faced a tough match against Cathkin High School, who are a direct feeder for Cambuslang RFC
As the boys were warming up they knew it would be a bit of a mud bath as there were several puddles on the pitch and it was very heavy underfoot. Preston Lodge kicked off and although Cathkin made some good ground PL stole the ball in their own half and this led to a series of drives by the forwards. As the ball came back five metres from the line Callum Buchanan picked up and drove low to score. Place kicking was very difficult due to conditions and the conversion was missed. PL then continued to put some good play together and the ball was spun wide to Mikey Simpson who skipped past a couple of defenders, before spinning out of the last tackle to score close to the sticks. The conversion was missed.
Cathkin then came into the game and following some good play by their forward the ball was passed to their big centre who crashed over. Cathkin converted. However PL were keen to increase their lead before half time and again the forwards drove low and hard up the middle of the park and Liam Mack did a pick and go and scored right under the posts. Paul Glynn kicked the conversion. Cathkin kicked off again and strong running by Glen Muir and Raymond Mackie led to the ball being passed along the back line and Sam Stewart was in a wide position to claim the try.
Half time score PLHS 22 Cathkin 7
In the second half the Cathkin boys seemed to tire and after strong running by Keiran Slater, Ross Galloway and Jim McLean the ball was passed out to the backs. Quick hands from Robbie Gordon and Johnny Sked gave Raymond Mackie space and he bounced off a couple of defenders to score in the corner. The kick was unsuccessful.
Cathkin then came right back into the game and a storming run from their big centre led to a score. The kicker missed the tricky conversation.
PL then kicked off and a mistake by Cathkin led to a pick and drive, all the forwards pilled in and the score was given. The captain Glen Muir emerged with the ball and a big smile on his face. Raymond Mackie was successful with the conversion.
The score was now 34 -12 and PL began to dominate the game a good scrum by the forwards led to Robbie Gordon throwing a couple of dummies before forcing his way over the line. This was quickly followed by a 30 metre run and touch down by Raymond Mackie, who is a prop that can scrum run the length of the park AND kick conversions - fantastic.
The Catkin side never gave up and they were rewarded with a third score for the big centre who we were later told was a Great Britain American Football international!! However PL had the final word and Sam Stewart cantered over the line for PL’s ninth and final try
Final score PLHS 49 Cathkin 17
The boys and coaches were delighted with the result and the great rugby played in the poor conditions. The boys headed home happy and now look forward to a semi final tie against Kinross who surprisingly beat Jedforest in the pervious round
