Exam preparation for S4 to S6 pupils

There are less than 11 weeks to go before the big Maths exam day and you should now be preparing for this pretty seriously.  I’ve attached a few thoughts on ways to plan your revision, and also a blank calendar which you can download and fill in.  I hope that you have heard all this advice before (but it makes me feel better to say it all again).  If anyone has any more ideas on good ways to prepare for exams, or would like to comment on mine, please respond to this post.

World Maths Day 09

Today, Wednesday 4th March 2009, is World Maths Day! WMD is a truly unique world event and a fantastic way to promote numeracy in schools and beyond. Past results show that students make significant improvements in their mental arithmetic skills and have fun in the process when taking part in the online games. Pupils can take part in head to head numeracy games against children their own age from all over the world.

Maths Teaser: Indian Verse - what’s the answer?

Bhaskara Acharya was an Indian mathematician and astronomer in the 12th century. One of his better known works was a text called Lilavati which was, as legend has it, written for his daughter. In this book, he writes a problem for his daughter:

O beautiful maiden with beaming eyes, tell me, since you understand the method of inversion, what number multiplied by 3, then increased by three-quarters of the product, then divided by 7, then diminished by one-third of the result, then multiplied by itself, then diminished by 52, whose square root is then extracted before 8 is added and then divided by 10, gives the final result of 2?

So what’s the answer? Answer below, with your reasoning please!
