Maths Teaser: What’s the Number?

Let’s have two teasers on the go.

  • What is the only number in which you can add up all it’s digits, and then multiply that number by three and get your original number?

Answer below, reason for your answer, and good luck once again!

Maths Teaser: Next Three Numbers

Back again. What are the next three numbers in this sequence?

1, 1, 2, 3, 7, 22, ?, ?, ?

Answer in the comments box below, with a reason please! Good Luck!

1c1: Solving Equations by Balancing

In the past few lessons 1c1 have been learning how to solve linear equations by balancing. To help us visualise this we have been using a website which allows us to “balance” equations.

If you want to practice. The website is here, remember to show your working!!

Pentominoes

1c1 have been studying tiling, tesselation and symmetry. Here are some of the things we have been looking at and tasks we have been doing.

M.C Escher - Fantastic artwork with a very strong mathematical interest. Particularlly using tesselation and symmetry.

Pentominoes

Pentominoes - Like a dominoe but made from five squares rather than just two. How many can be made? What are their symmetrical properties and can we make tessellation patterns using them.

We have been trying to tile using the pentominoes into a fixed shape. This has developed into a challenge between the boys and girls. Who will win in the pentominoe challenge - boys or girls! The result is currently 2 - 0 to the boys.

The girls seem very motivated to launch a comeback and I am sure that next time they will be well prepared!!!

Try the challenge here (Starter Activity - Section 3)

Maths Teaser: Missing Numbers

X - 14 - 15 - 92 - 653 - 5897 - 9323 - Y - …..

What numbers should replace the X and the Y?

Answer in the comments box below, and again, a reason for your answer please!

Maths Teaser: Password

This maths teaser is slightly different - getting the correct answer gains you the password to a hidden area of PrestonLodge.net, but you’ll have to use your skills as a mathematician to get it. The password is made up of 5 digits; here are your clues:

The fourth number is 1 more than the second number.

The second number plus the third number equals nine.

The 5th number plus the third number equals 8.

The 1st number is one less than four times the second number.

The sum of all five numbers is 20.

But the first problem is, where is the hidden area of this site?…

1c1 have been finding out about and discussing Prime Numbers.

1c1 Homework: Is 1 a Prime Number?

Continuing from the discussions we have been having about the “100 lockers” problem. Can you tell me if 1 is a prime number? (and how you have found your answer.)

Mr. Stewart

Maths Teaser: Lockers

Suppose you’re in a hallway with 100 closed lockers against the wall.lockers

You start by opening every locker. Then you go back and close every second locker. Then you go to every third locker and open it if it’s closed, or close it if it’s open. Let’s call this action ‘toggling’ a locker. Continue ‘toggling’ every nth locker on pass no n (e.g. ‘toggling’ every 26th locker on pass 26).

My question is, after 100 passes, where you ‘toggle’ only locker #100, how many lockers are open?

Answer in the comments area below, with some reasoning or an explanation please! Good luck!

Maths Exams: The Results

Now that the exam results are through, the SQA have released their official marking instructions for all the maths exams set in 2008. All levels can be viewed/downloaded here. The Grade Boundaries for all subjects at all levels is also available here.

The poll in the sidebar has been updated to ask ‘what grade did you get?’, which should make an interesting comparison to the poll asked before the results were sent asking ‘what grade do you think you’ll get?’ (which can be seen below)
