Tomatina - Tomato Fight!!! August 28, 2008

Posted by Mme. Leslie in : s4 , trackback

On the last Wednesday in August every year the World’s largest and craziest Tomato Fight takes place in the sleepy, traditional village of Buñol, 40km from Valencia, turning it into one of the highlights on Spain’s summer festivals calendar…over 40,000 people flock to Buñol to take part.  Trucks carrying over 40 tonnes of ripe, squashed tomatoes are brought into the Main Square and adjoining narrow streets where local farmer’s fire tomatoes into the crowds – the tomatoes are then released and the fight is on!!

>It is thought the tradition began in 1945 when a fight erupted among two young members of a carnival crowd. A vegetable stall was nearby in the town square and every started throwing tomatoes at each other. Exactly one year later, young people met at the square, but this time with their own tomatoes. Another food-fight started but was broken up by police.

In the following years this practice was banned by the authorities, but due to popular demand was given official recognition in 1959. This was only to occur if participants would respect the start and the end of tomato-throwing being announced with a banger.

Mickey - I think Tomatina, the tomato fight, is a waste of time but I think it would be a fun experience.
Andrew R - I think this event is very strange and a waist of good money
Chris - I think it would be fun to do the tomato fight
Andrew F.: I think a tomato fight is a good idea
