A Walk on the Wild Side….
Lesson 7 - 15/5/2007
What an exciting afternoon! Richard, one of our local countryside rangers, came into school to speak to us today. He brought with him a collection of stuffed woodland animals - a fox, a badger, a stoat and a weasel. We talked about all sorts of things concerning these and other animals, as well as some of the plants, trees and flowers you might find in a wood. Some of the things we talked about were what the animals ate, where they live, their young and how they use their senses to find food and avoid danger. We played some really cool games with string to illustrate how food chains work.
Then we put on our welly boots and went for a woodland walk. As we walked Richard pointed out different plants and animals along the way. In the wood we built a human tree. Some of us were roots, some the trunk, others were the ‘tubes’ that take the water up the trunk. Some of us were leaves and twigs and the rest represented the bark. Finally we got to root about among the trees and bushes to find a variety of insects and ‘beasties’. These are an important part of woodland life as they form a vital part of the woodland food chain.
You can see the photos of our afternoon below.
