Foreword
Changes have recently been made to the law to help parents and schools work together as partners in children’s learning. The Scottish Parliament has passed the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 to encourage and support more parents to become involved.
Because you have such a vital role to play in your children’s education, the Act aims to make it easier for you to become involved in your own child’s education and in your child’s school more generally.
In East Lothian, schools and parents are already working together to make sure that every parent can be more involved in their child’s education and what happens at school.
We have drafted this Strategy so that you can see (and comment on) where we are now with parental involvement and where we want to be soon. We hope that it sets out the issues that you have told us we need to address. It is based on 18 months of consultation with parents, carers, pupils and teachers in East Lothian. It also shows you how you can still take part in shaping the strategy and how you can get much more involved in your school.
I hope that you will read this Draft Strategy (800 KB, pdf, 20 pages) carefully and let me know what you think. Your feedback is vital in helping us to produce our final Strategy, which we hope to launch in November. It would be really good if I could have your comments by 12 October 2007.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
