Good luck Jack and Euan June 8, 2008

jack-euan.jpg  We wish Jack and Euan all the very best for this Wednesday as they will be competing in the National Knex Challenge competition at Glasgow University.  The Knex Challenge is an annual national event to encourage budding engineers.  The first round of the event was held in our own class and Jack & Euan achieved enough points to allow them to compete in the next round, at cluster level.  The boys’ design won them a place at next regional round which was held at Edinburgh Zoo.  Their successful contruction of a warehouse was good enough to take them to national finals at Glasgow University this Wednesday.  Everyone at Law has their fingers crossed; good luck guys.

Since beginning our project on energy we have looked at the different forms of energy and the ways in which we can produce electrical energy; especially through the use of fossil fuels.  Having learned more about the fact that fossil fuels are a non- renewable energy source we have just started to investigate renewable energy sources.  This week three websites have been included in our lessons and here are the links if you want to check them out for yourself:
Kidsite  - Climate Change
Eco Mission
Wind Energy with Miller

and here are some others that you might be able to explore for yourself.  Have fun.

Site 2
Site 3
Site 4
Any additional work that you can do on the subject will help you with our forthcoming `P6 Energy Debate`.  Why don’t you add a comment to tell your classmates which of the above sites and activities you would recommend and WHY?

With our recent space mission finished it is time to return to Earth and re-energise.  If you haven’t already guessed our next topic is `Energy’.  What is it?  Where does it come from? How will we produce energy in the future?
If you want to learn more about our topic, I would recommend the following website.  You can learn about how we get electricity into our homes and you can also build your own school - give it a go!

Your Reading Challenge(s) April 29, 2008

Here is your opportunity to earn some free time in class!! Yes, you can kick back and relax on the rug while your classmates work all around you.  Are you interested?? If so read on -

If you can read 5 books (and prove it) you can earn stars that will result in some `chilling time’ in class.   The success criteria for this task will be discussed and decided within the class.

Not interested in this challenge?  Maybe you might be interested in the second reading mission?  Each week you work with your Paired Reading partners, but maybe we can do more to help our buddies outside of class too?  Do they prefer the computer compared to a book?
Why don’t you look at the following website, on which you read childrens’ books from around the world?

Children’s Library

There are books for all ages and languages.  I am sure that you will find some that you enjoy yourselves but you might also find books which are suitable for your Paired Reader.  Please read the story to make sure that it is suitable for your buddie (I will check your suggestions) and then write a recommendation to your Paired Reading; by simply writing a comment against this posting.
Your Paired Reader will then be able to access your recommendation and follow your suggestion.  Give it a go, they will really appreciate your help and you might enjoy it too.
Good luck with it, Miss Brodie

This week I learned that Uranus, Neptune and Jupiter have rings as well as Saturn but they are really faint so you can hardly see them.
What did you learn this week?  Leave a comment.

I have just finished Michael Murpurgo’s ‘ Kensuke’s Kingdom ‘ and I would recommend it because it’s action-packed with adventure, you can’t guess what happens next and every event leaves you on a ciffhanger.

Have you also read a book recently that you really enjoyed?  Why don’t you write a blog posting too to tell your classmates about it?  Or you could just write a comment on this posting.
