A generous friend once introduced me to the world of comic books by loaning me box after box of comics over a couple of years. I started as dismissively critical, and ended as an enthusiastic fan.
My preference was for DC and I do have a soft spot for Green Lantern. Aah, happy days… Of course, one key element [...]

Who is the Masked Mother?
Published January 28th, 2008 in Education and Random lifestyle. 9 CommentsMy heart sinks when I see stories about ‘pushy parents’ - like this BBC write-up of a Guardian article.
Ironically, this article is listed alongside another in which parents are encouraged to get more involved by reading to their children! Ever felt you can’t win?
Pity the poor parent trying to tread the fine line between supporting and being over-bearing, a [...]
Contrary to Reports
Published December 13th, 2007 in Education and Personal Reminiscence. 0 Comments“Miss Caroline… had bright auburn hair, pink cheeks and wore bright crimson finger-nail polish. She also wore high-heeled pumps and a red=and-white striped dress. She looked and smelled like a peppermint drop.”
When, as an early teen, I read this description of Scout Finch’s teacher in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the image which sprang to mind [...]
I’m a Parent… and a Customer
Published December 2nd, 2007 in Education and Random lifestyle. 7 CommentsHere’s a posting with an elephantine gestation. It was started in repsonse to Don’s considerations of teaching, children and parents in relation to customer service. But it became too long, too personal and too late to be part of that original discussion.
I was interested to read some of the impressions people seem to have of customers and [...]
The Juggernaut of Responsibility
Published November 26th, 2007 in Education and Random lifestyle. 0 CommentsNot much posting going on - and not much lurking and commenting on other people’s blogs either - despite the best of intentions.
We’ve had a good few days which have been ‘non-routine’ as the Beloved Spouse has been undergoing and recovering from a standard medical procedure which shouldn’t have any long-term concerns attached to it [...]
They’re Going to Party like it’s… 1807?
Published November 20th, 2007 in Education and Offspring. 4 CommentsA Small Female Offspring came home and announced that they’d been doing paired dancing in gym class, in preparation for some sort of Christmas celebration.
Apparently - and of course I’ve only got the Small Offspring’s interpretation on this - the girls are to stand and wait for the boys to come and select them because [...]
Had a phonecall from school today - a follow-up to a query about one of those puzzling letters. I’d been given a brief (and negative) answer in the playground by a teacher, and although the answer I got in the phonecall was still the answer that I didn’t want, I really appreciated the courtesy of [...]
It’s been a tough week, school-wise.
Everything seems to have involved some complication. Incoherent letters home which required clarification, other strangely-worded letters to ponder over with other parents. Writing homework involving copying mis-spelled words from worksheets, nasty rumours of new school injunctions in the playground, little fund-raising scandals and boycotting plans.
Each day has had some worry, [...]
Doing the Headteacher Hustings
Published November 13th, 2007 in Education and Personal Reminiscence. 0 CommentsIt seems to have spread like bird flu. First Mumble’s headteacher went and now I hear that other nearby heads are leaving, replacing, shifting.
Which means that people are having to be busy bunnies sifting applications and sitting on interview boards. In my previous life and in a very different field, I sat on a good few [...]
