Reading Around the Subject

Funny thing, synchronicity. First guineapigmum writes about how much the choice (and maybe quality) of literature set texts has changed since her day. And then someone casually threw the phrase ‘reciprocal reading’ into conversation in such a way that had me scurrying off to Google. So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the [...]

A Weekend with the Two Jonathans

We don’t get much chance for big self-indulgence, here in the Soup household, but that makes you enjoy little treats all the more. In the midst of the usual busy-busyness of a family weekend we’ve rather enjoyed ourselves with a bit of what we fancied.
We took out one of these ‘free’ trials for DVD rentals, [...]

Landing the Helicopter of Children on the Front Garden of Time

Much has been made in the news recently of the romantic/profligate activities of Prince William, landing a Chinook helicopter on his girlfriend’s lawn. I’m not looking for a grand gesture, but Fathersoup, who has a very fleeting knowledge of military aircraft from his life Before Me, squinted along the garden and announced that if I [...]

The Importance of Being Idle

Just checked the term dates sheet, and today is a day off school because it’s an Edinburgh holiday, not an in-service day.

Realism has it place, but good art doesn’t always look real

At least, nobody ever told me that early enough. And the artists who could have shown me - like Rembrandt above - I didn’t get to know until too late.
Now [...]

Missing You Already

I wasn’t much looking forward to the Easter holidays. Amusing x-number of Offspring over two and a half weeks of unpredictable spring weather felt as if it was going to be a considerable undertaking.
But we’ve really enjoyed ourselves. We’ve always had lots to do, and the days have rocketed past. It was astonishing how quickly [...]

Being a Green Metropolitan

I was having an off-site chat with guineapigmum about the joys of dealing with the mounds of kids’ outgrown clutter that fill our homes and I mentioned the GreenMetropolis website as a great way of finding loving homes for surplus books. So here’s that info I promised you, gpm!
GreenMetropolis ‘recycle’ books and make a donation to the Woodland [...]
