Time Rushing Onwards

There’s Allsorts talking about remembering things with joy instead of (or perhaps, as well as) coping with the petty frustrations of life with children. Time goes all too fast - we should make the most of our time with our kids, rather than fussing.

It’s certainly true. But it cuts both ways. I’m astonished to realise just how much of this school year has gone already. There aren’t really that many weeks in each term, and for a youngster - with the potential of changing so quickly - each week, each day, can involve huge leaps forward.

Which is one more reason why I niggle at missed opportunities. Forgetting a child’s school library book, or reading book, or both can mean a pretty lengthy gap or a rather big missed opportunity. A child who benefits from regular one-to-one time with a teacher will feel the lack of that support if it’s missing for a week or two. But there’s not time for everything in the school week. Special activities are valuable in themselves, but by definition they’re likely to involve disruption to the usual timetable. As a result there are times when my Offspring’s progress in particular subjects seems to slow to a near stop for weeks on end, then take dizzying leaps forward - usually just at the point I want to start asking “Yes - and…?” questions of the school.

I’ve got to trust that the teachers know what they’re doing - although I wish I had the information to anticipate it - and in the meantime all I can do is try to ensure that the right things are in the bag on the right day, just in case…
