Thank Goodness it’s the Weekend

http://www.flickr.com/photos/forezt/It’s been a tough week, school-wise.

Everything seems to have involved some complication. Incoherent letters home which required clarification, other strangely-worded letters to ponder over with other parents. Writing homework involving copying mis-spelled words from worksheets, nasty rumours of new school injunctions in the playground, little fund-raising scandals and boycotting plans.

Each day has had some worry, niggle or confusion. Each one on its own seems too petty to mention, but the cumulative effect has been emotionally exhausting. Although the school is full of communication professionals, sometimes things seem to end up pretty far off the mark.

Hope next week is an improvement.

I remember once stomping into the school brandishing a French worksheet with at least 3 misspelt French words. I figured English spelling was still enough of a challenge without teaching them mistakes in French.

Posted that too soon - I did feel sorry for the teacher as I think she was the one who didn’t step back fast enough when jobs were being doled out. They managed to get some specialist help not long after that, if I remember correctly.

It’s not an easy one, is it? Are you being a picky know-it-all, or genuinely congruent? This was a common spelling mistake - but it was a comprehension task where the original word was clearly and correctly spelt throughout the original text. A photocopied hand-written worksheet too, so no excuse as a typo. I’d told the Offspring that she could use the worksheets to look for and copy any tough words needed, but I had to go back on that and make some excuse. Offspring took great delight in putting a big cross through the mistake! All I could do then was add a ‘?’. Don’t know if it was even noticed at school: I think I’d need to see another such instance before I said anything…
