The Juggernaut of Responsibility

Not much posting going on - and not much lurking and commenting on other people’s blogs either - despite the best of intentions.
We’ve had a good few days which have been ‘non-routine’ as the Beloved Spouse has been undergoing and recovering from a standard medical procedure which shouldn’t have any long-term concerns attached to it [...]

They’re Going to Party like it’s… 1807?

A Small Female Offspring came home and announced that they’d been doing paired dancing in gym class, in preparation for some sort of Christmas celebration.
Apparently - and of course I’ve only got the Small Offspring’s interpretation on this - the girls are to stand and wait for the boys to come and select them because [...]

How MotherSoup made Dog Soup

If you’re a mother with younger children, then there’s a phrase which makes your heart sink. Its:
SURFACE WASHABLE ONLY
I’m rather of the opinion that if a soft toy cannot be washed then it’s been over-engineered.
OK if it’s got some electronic component, then it’s not going to be happy in the washine machine - mind you, [...]

The Start of a New Week

Had a phonecall from school today - a follow-up to a query about one of those puzzling letters. I’d been given a brief (and negative) answer in the playground by a teacher, and although the answer I got in the phonecall was still the answer that I didn’t want, I really appreciated the courtesy of [...]

Thank Goodness it’s the Weekend

It’s been a tough week, school-wise.
Everything seems to have involved some complication. Incoherent letters home which required clarification, other strangely-worded letters to ponder over with other parents. Writing homework involving copying mis-spelled words from worksheets, nasty rumours of new school injunctions in the playground, little fund-raising scandals and boycotting plans.
Each day has had some worry, [...]

Doing the Headteacher Hustings

It seems to have spread like bird flu. First Mumble’s headteacher went and now I hear that other nearby heads are leaving, replacing, shifting.
Which means that people are having to be busy bunnies sifting applications and sitting on interview boards. In my previous life and in a very different field, I sat on a good few [...]

Let us Now Praise Famous Teachers*

(*with apologies to the author of Sirah (Ecclesiasticus) 44:1)
In my very first posting, I expressed my concern about the potential for unprofessionality amongst staff who might read these parent blogs. This week, Don Ledingham has been considering a hypothetical dilemma involving parents using these blogs to criticise teachers.
Time for a bit of the positive…
I wanted to [...]

X Education

One of the Offspring bounced out of school yesterday and announced in a loud and carrying voice:
“In seven weeks it will be Christmas Eve!”
I was shocked. What a thing for a child to say to its mother in the middle of the playground. I really didn’t need to hear that. There’s enough of this kind [...]

East Lothian Life (or: why I chose my header)

As I write this - for who knows if it may change in the future - my header image is the beach at Gullane on an icy cold but clear winter’s morning. It’s a lovely place to go at any time of year, but off-season it is often possible to have one of the most [...]

Hello yourself, world…

After umming and aahing about starting this blog since before half-term, I now find I haven’t actually thought about what to write for the first, virginity-losing post.
I’m here thanks to guineapigmum. She is coping with one of the worst years that anyone could experience and is still finding the time to chivvy gently at parents like me [...]
