The Pupil Council raised funds to buy goalposts. It arrived yesterday and Mr Serle, David, Ross, Josh and Jacob put it together. The goalposts will be kept in the school garden and brought out during intervals. The children also got a new football and referee yellow and red cards. Well done primary seven for achieving your goal!

Mid Calder Yearbook November 7, 2008

Welcome to the Mid Calder Yearbook Blog.  It’s a blog for parents and pupils to debate what should appear in the Class of 2009’s books which will be printed and ready before leaving in June.  Use it to bounce ideas off each other, put together plans or ideas for what could feature this year - it’s for you, so don’t be shy.  We have a basic template from last year which worked well, but the great thing about yearbooks is that they can evolve over time.  Post your thoughts, any thoughts, and the outcome will be a yearbook, exactly as you want it!!

This is Lukalu Umea Primary School in Uganda. The other photo is the primary two class. Over the coming months the whole school, at Mid Calder will be working on a variety of ways to raise funds to help Lukalu Umea refurbish their P3/2 class. At present Mid Calder’s P3/2 has produced playground books, P4 are making calendars and P6 will be writing a novel in collaboration with their French partners. Primary seven have designed a logo which will go on all fundraising items. We hope to set up a working partnership with Lukalu Umea where many classes will be examining culture and diversity.

Primary 3/2 has recently been out and about in Mid Calder Village looking at the buildings, shops, park and the local Church. This week as part of their technology work, the children made these junk models of the Church, play park, school building and Torphichen House. They worked in groups to discuss what to make and selected suitable materials to use.

Back Packs for Africa

As you will know, children in P3 are studying Africa this term. Along with the wildlife and landforms, we will be comparing our own way of life to that of many African children. Our children have discovered how privileged they are compared to thousands of others. To encourage our pupils to become Responsible Citizens, we are going to make this year’s enterprise venture Back Packs for Africa. Briefly, thousands of children all over the globe have no school bags! Nor do they have anything to put in them.

The idea will be to collect and fill as many back packs as possible. If you and your child would like to fill a bag, it need not be a new one. Many of our children change their bags to suit the fashion. Poorer children will have no such notions – as long as it is in good condition. Suggested items to put in the back packs are –

exercise books/notepads, pencils, pens, crayons, erasers, rulers, sharpeners, pencil case, towel, school dress/skirt, t-shirt, shorts, flip flops/sandals, small ball (tennis ball), soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, spoon, small toy. REMEMBER, SECOND-HAND IS GOOD!

Any contributions, however small, will be welcome, and our children will be responsible for collecting and organising these back packs. For more information visit: www.marysmeals.org

Thanks for your help.
