Work Experience

9 12 2008

On the week starting the 8th December half of 4th year go out on work experience. I am included in this half and I decided to go to Balfour Beatty Construction.

I am now in my second day of work experience and its great. On Monday I got some induction training, was issued with a key card and then started to speak to various people in different departments - learning what they do and how. I now know about the marketing, planning and estimating departments. I also watched a presentation from one of Balfour Beatty’s suppliers.

On both Monday and Tuesday I was working in Dean House (main office) and work from 9am to 5pm, whereas the rest of the week I am gong to be based on one of their construction sites - the National Museum of Scotland, on Chamber Street, Edinburgh - and will work from 8am to 4:30pm.

The whole point of this weeks work experience is to see how Balfour Beatty work from hearing about a job, through designing, planning and estimating the job and then eventually building it.

Prelim Exams

28 11 2008

In school we are currently half-way through sitting our prelim exams in all of our eight Standard Grade subjects. The exams started on Wednesday 19th November, but my first exam wasn’t until the Thursday, and was English reading, then writing, both of which were extremely hard. I then had the rest of the week, with the next exam not until Tuesday 25th.

The computing exams were one after another on Thursday 27th. The General level exam was easy and the Credit wasn’t really that difficult.

However,

One of the questions in the exam went something like this:

“What is a client and server network?”

And in class, we had only ever spoken about it once, briefly, for 2 minutes and never made any notes on the subject, so I had to guess the answer and probably got it wrong. There was also another question asking for 2 differences between a LAN and WAN, another subject that we have never studied in any detail. However, all the questions that I was able to answer were rather easy.

The good news is that I only four exams left, 3 of which are going to be easy as they are at General level, the fourth and final exam is the Business Management at Credit level.

My blog is still not finished but as I said before, should be finished for returning to school in January 2009 after Christmas.

Under Construction

21 11 2008

I have decided to start again with my blog, giving it a face lift and deleting previous posts, and am going to try my hardest to try and update it every so often – once every two week. I am currently still working on it but might take a while to get back to normal as I am busy studying for prelims. It should be up and working again for the New Year.
