Observations

Observations are crucial to MR Tracker approach because:

  • Teaching focuses just beyond the cutting edge of child’s knowledge
  • Teaching involves intensive ongoing observation and continual micro-adjusting
  • Teaching supports and builds upon children’s intuitive, verbally based strategies
  • By looking at assessment interviews we can begin to think about the strategies we could use in class.

In this section are examples of  assessment interview techniques. In each case, the interviewer is using the task to ascertain where the child is in his understanding.

These tasks can be adapted to a learning and teaching tool that promotes ongoing observation and micro-adjusting.

What is the child  doing? Why?

What knowledge of number does this demonstrate?

How could this knowledge be reinforced / extended?

How could this approach be used within the classroom?

What questions would support this activity?
