Macmerry Sensory Garden - John Muir Award

We are making a Sensory Garden in the area of the school grounds next to the Marsh Garden. Dave, our janitor, cut old railway sleepers into triangular shapes. We have been very busy filling the triangles with soil and have been trying to decide what plants to place in each area. Mrs Robertson, our P3/4 teacher has been a great help. Leigh Shearer, a countryside Ranger who has helped us in the past, is coming to visit us next week to provide us with more help us to choose suitable plants. We are looking forward to planting our new garden and hope to make a film showing us doing this next week. We have been recording the wildlife in the school grounds at different times of day and during different weather conditions in our John Muir record books.

African Art

We looked at pictures of African art and then worked in four groups to see what we could create. We decided who would be in each group and then worked together for an afternoon with Andrew Crummy. We hope that you like our work. It will be displayed in Ross High on 11th and 12th June when all of the primary schools in the Ross High cluster will meet each other and the staff.

We were very lucky to have Mathias Hauya in our class yesterday. He answered lots of questions that we had prepared as part of our project about Malawi. He spent most of the morning helping us to produce a podcast and then answered questions from the younger children in the school. We intend to link with a school in Malawi and Mathias has kindly offered to help us to do this.

Podcasting at Macmerry - African Drumming

We had great fun on Friday when we experienced African drumming with Daniel Duggan. We also met the P7 children from Elphinstone Primary and spent breaktime with them. This visit formed part of our global awareness project about Malawi. We are looking forward to our African art session. We will produce a display about Malawi in Ross High before our two-day visit later this term. Health Fortnight

We have just completed our annual Health Fortnight. We had many visitors in school and learned how to eat in a healthy way and how to look after our teeth. We used the new Keeping Myself Safe program and used the computer to record the strategies that we have learned to keep us safe. We enjoyed watching and discussing the scenarios and discussing them with our friends. PC Cairns was unable to attend the planned session about drugs but we were lucky that one of the parents who took part in our walk to Winton Woods, PC Smith, was also a policeman and he stepped in and led a very informative session about the various categories of drugs. We especially enjoyed looking at the samples, enclosed in plastic cases, that he brought with him. Some of us were able to wear his stab proof vest and feel what it is like to be handcuffed!We intend to make a slideshow or a podcast about our experiences soon. DT and Mural Official Opening Afternoon

We enjoyed showing our robotic devices to parents, other classes and visitors including Dr Hill and Stewart MacKinnon. The robots were designed to clean up an imaginary toxic spill. We choose our groups and were provided with a motor. Liam and Cameron were helped at home to produce the robots. After the opening of the mural we enjoyed some juice and biscuits.
