BEBO

Often in my Intermediate2 RMPS class I hear pupils discussing BEBO – who has added a new post, what comical picture has been drawn on someone’s wall, what new poll has been added etc. Taking their passion for ICT and communication outside of school hours we’ve decided to start an Intermediate2 RMPS learning log.

At our weekly revision/homework club this topic became our priority. Pupils led the discussion and came up with aims and objectives about what the learning log should be like. So, without further ado, here is what they came up with:

• Colourful
• Inspiring others to take RMPS/challenging peoples’ perception of the subject
• Not too much text
• Helpful
• Readable
• Well laid out – you know where everything is
• Interesting
• Personal – reports on trips, pupil work and photos
• Links to other useful sites
• Open up to wider than our class: finding out more about RMPS

As soon as the site goes live I’ll post the address.

    Nice one Luke!!

I look forward to reading the log once it is up and running! Keep up the good work :)

I think that sounds like a fab idea. I might get you to tell me how you set it up, might be something I could suggest get set up at school here!

This sounds great, let me know if I can help. You’ve done exactly the right thing in setting your objectives this way. Here are some random thoughts:
    Colourful
    - We’ve a good choice of themes, but can add others from sources such as the WordPress Theme viewer

    - And you can write your posts in colour!

Inspiring others to take RMPS/challenging peoples’ perception of the subject
    - this one’s down to the class!

    Not too much text
    - You can include images, audio and video in your blog - no programming required! And if you want, even make a podcast radio show that your audience can subscribe to, for example in iTunes.
Have a look at the Podcasting pages on the eduBuzz support wiki
    Helpful
    - your audience will soon let you know, via comments, if it’s not!
    Readable
    - Exc-el’s system lets you use all the sort of formatting you’d expect from a good word processor (bold, italics, bullets, colour etc) to make your text easy on the eye online.
Well laid out – you know where everything is
    - With an Exc-el blog, you can create Pages as well as Posts. They can be assembled into a web site very easily. Have a look at how Law Primary are using Pages to get an idea of what’s possible.
    Interesting
    - there’s lots of guidance on the web about how to make your site appeal to teenagers, such as this from web usability guru Jakob Nielsen
Personal – reports on trips, pupil work and photos
    - we can easily set up each member of the class with their own login, so that they can create their own contributions
    Links to other useful sites
    - just use Blogroll/Add Link to add these to the Blogroll
Open up to wider than our class: finding out more about RMPS
    - Why not start reading other blogs where people are talking about RMPS, and posting some comments? Leave a link to your blog, and they’ll soon come back and comment on yours.

Thanks David - If your free at any point after the holiday I think it would be good to meet up so you can run through some more things with me e.g. inserting videos, creating slide shows etc. Let me know.

Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to start the Learning Log since there were ‘technical’ problems. I’m hopefully going to establish one for my new Standard Grade and Higher class though.
