Explorer Backpack Storytime February 9, 2010
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , add a commentParents and carers came along to our story time today. Mrs Gaunt read “On The Way Home” by Jill Murphy. This is one of the books in the backpack. Lots of parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters came to the storytime. The children really enjoyed the story and joined in. They are looking forward to joining the Backpackers Challenge at the local library and getting their baseball caps. They can’t wait to borrow books and to start collecting badges to go on their bags.
There is going to be a special storytime at Musselburgh Library on Monday 15th February at 11am for the Backpackers! There will be stories, songs and a craft activity.
Children are invited to join the The Backpackers’ Club Challenge which is a free programme for all four year olds in East Lothian and is intended to reward them for borrowing books from their local library.
You just need to follow these five simple steps to get your child joined up to the club:
- Join your child up to the library as a member in their own right.
- Ask the librarian to join your child up to the Backpackers’ Club Challenge.
- Your child will immediately receive an embroidered collectable badge to stick on their Backpack, and a baseball cap.
- Each time your child visits the library and borrows books he or she will be given a badge.
- When a child has collected all six badges, they will be given a special certificate.
Happy reading!

The week beginning 8th February will also see the launch of the Backpackers Club and associated Club Challenge in participating libraries across East Lothian. Click here for more information about the club and backpacks.

Christmas in the Nursery December 13, 2009
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , add a commentWe have been very busy in the Nursery classes. The children decorated the Christmas tree. We are listening to lots of stories about Christmas. We are singing Christmas songs, and getting ready to put on a show. Our show is in the gym hall on Monday 21st December at 9.30.
We have made Christmas cakes together. We closed our eyes and made a wish while we were stirring the cake. We have all marzipanned, iced and decorated our own piece of cake.
We are enjoying dressing up in our new Nativity costumes, as well as dressing up as Santa and his elves. The home corner has been turned into a stable, complete with straw!
We can use the interactive whiteboard to decorate Christmas trees and make snowmen. We are using the computer to send Santa emails.
We are all trying to be very good in the nursery, because we hope Santa will be kind to us! Merrry Christmas!
Scotland and St Andrew November 22, 2009
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , add a commentThe nursery classes have been learning about Scotland and St Andrew.
We have been dressing up in tartan clothes, dancing to Scottish music and trying some Scottish foods. We have had oatcakes, tattie scones, haggis, neeps and tatties. We are going to make shortbread this week.
We have been painting pictures of thistles, and designing our own tartans with paint and felt pens. We are learning to sing Coulter’s Candy.
We are looking at maps to see where Scotland is, and talking about where we live within Scotland.
The nursery children learn about composting April 1, 2009
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Eco Committee, Nursery , 1 comment so farTo help the nursery children understand why we put things in the compost bucket, 2 members of the Eco Comittee came to talk to the afternoon group. Hannah and Marie explained to the children what can and can’t go into the green compost bucket in the nursery. We then went with them to the big compost bin in the woods. We saw the compost at the bottom of the bin and Marie tipped our fruit and vegetable waste into the bin. The buckets have to be cleaned, and we watched the girls wash them out. We helped by drying the buckets.
We are going to try and cut down on the fruit and vegetables that go into the compost bucket, by choosing our snack carefully. We are going to all try to remember to put our fruit and vegetable waste into the compost bucket, and not in the bin.

Nursery Christmas Show December 19, 2008
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , 1 comment so farThe nursery put on our Christmas show today for the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and friends. The children have worked hard practising thier songs over the last few weeks, and performed really well.
The children sang Winter Wonderland, Twinkle Twinkle, Away in a Manger, Jingle Bells, Rudolph, When Santa Got Stuck up the Chimney, Here We go Round the Christmas Tree and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
A special mention should go to our stage manager, Arron, who kept us right on the day!
Many thanks to all the parents who have helped us with the party and show over the past 2 days. We couldn’t do it without your help!
Nursery Christmas Party December 19, 2008
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , add a commentWe had our nursery Christmas party today, and had a great time. We had an entertainer who did some magic and put on a puppet show. We then ate our party food which we all enjoyed. We played pass the parcel and musical statues. We also danced the Conga and the Cha Cha Slide which was great fun! Santa found time to come to our party and brought the boys and girls a present of a book each.
St Andrew’s Celebrations November 18, 2008
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , 2commentsThe nursery classes are learning about Scotland and St Andrew.
We are learning the Scottish songs Ali Bali and Three Craws. We have “3 craws” on the interactive whiteboard, and the children have been drawing Saltires on the board as well as producing them with crayons, paint and collage. We have been looking at pictures of thistles, and drawing them. We have been dressing up in kilts and dancing to Scottish music. We exercise to Scottish music as part of our gym lesson.
We have been looking at maps of the world, the British Isles, Scotland and East Lothian, to pinpoint where Musselburgh is. The children have also been drawing their own maps.
We have had porridge for snack (which we really weren’t keen on!) and will be having oatcakes too. On Thursday we will be making some shortbread with Mrs Gaunt (which we think we will like!)
