P6 Enterprise ‘Hearing Dogs for the Deaf’ November 27, 2008
Posted by S Gilhooly in : Primary 6 , 2commentsA few weeks ago P6 invited Mrs Janie McGregor into the school to talk to everyone about the charity that she works for called ‘Hearing Dogs for the Deaf’.
Today Janie and her two chocolate labradors called Coco and Nell came to our school assembly. Fraser and Kieran introduced our Christmas charity by talking about the enterprise day that P6 are organising. All that we raise will go to help train dogs, 75% of which are rescue dogs! Janie told us how the dogs can help deaf people, we found out that through touch the dogs are telling its owner that there is someone at the door, someone on the phone or even when the toast is ready! We also learned that these dogs can save their owner’s life by lying at their feet, that indicates to the owner that there is danger in the form of a fire.
These are some opinions from P6 about how we felt about seeing the dogs and hearing what Janie had to say:
We thought that the dogs were very clever. By Leia & Lauren
We felt very happy because less dogs are being abandoned and being trained to be hearing dogs. By Patricia and Shannon.
I thought it was very interesting,i want to earn as much money as possible! By Megan.
Janie told us that dogs for deaf people have to be trained a lot to do their job. by Josh Aidan and Ronan.
We will keep you updated about the events taking place on Wednesday the 17th of December.
Thank you
P6

Christmas Card Competition November 26, 2008
Posted by S Rosie in : Primary 7 , 5commentsPrimary five and six were asked to design a Christmas card for a competition for the Westminster Parliament. On Friday 21st November Anne Moffat, the MP for East Lothian, visited the classes to announce the winner. The winning design was created by Aidan from primary five and he was presented with a Westminster goodie bag as well as a copy of his card. Anne explained to the pupils that 2000 copies of Aidan’s card would be sent out to a variety of people including the Prime Minister and the Queen!
Well done Aidan!

Chocolate! November 25, 2008
Posted by C Capaldi in : Eco Committee, Previous Years , 3commentsAs part of Green Week, P7 decided to do the topic Sustaining our World. The theme we chose was Chocolate! We looked at a typical day in the life of a cocoa farmer in Ghana, did surveys of people’s chocolate habits throughout the school and played the chocolate trade game.
In the trade game we played the role of a person, group or organisation in the chocolate production chain, eg. cocoa farmer, chocolate company, supermarket, consumer. We bought and sold goods, recorded our transactions and calculated our profits. We were astonished to discover that the supermarkets made a lot of profit, even though the farmers did the most the work!
We then discussed the real facts and figures of ordinary chocolate production compared with Fair trade chocolate production.

Book Fair - The Totals are In !!! November 25, 2008
Posted by Simon Broadhurst in : Book Fair, Fundraising News , 1 comment so farWow !!!! The totals are in and we can confirm that as a result of the support shown by all the children and parents throughout the week of the book fair, we have raised an incredible £913 for the school, out of total sales of over £1600 !!!! The £913 will be used to purchase books for a new school library which is currently being planned. A huge thank you to all the parent helpers who assisted in giving up their free time to run the fair and to the Parent Council for donating £2 for each child to spend at the fair.
A magnificent effort so until the next time - keep on reading !!!!!!!

Every class in the school learned about one aspect of Ecoschools, for example Litter, Waste Minimisation, Transport, Biodiveristy etc. The children were encouraged to bring fruit or a wrapper-free snack for their playtime and there was a daily Eco-Challenge!
The Eco committee would like to thank everyone for working hard to keep Loretto green.

St Andrew’s Celebrations November 18, 2008
Posted by Janette Gaunt in : Nursery , 2commentsThe nursery classes are learning about Scotland and St Andrew.
We are learning the Scottish songs Ali Bali and Three Craws. We have “3 craws” on the interactive whiteboard, and the children have been drawing Saltires on the board as well as producing them with crayons, paint and collage. We have been looking at pictures of thistles, and drawing them. We have been dressing up in kilts and dancing to Scottish music. We exercise to Scottish music as part of our gym lesson.
We have been looking at maps of the world, the British Isles, Scotland and East Lothian, to pinpoint where Musselburgh is. The children have also been drawing their own maps.
We have had porridge for snack (which we really weren’t keen on!) and will be having oatcakes too. On Thursday we will be making some shortbread with Mrs Gaunt (which we think we will like!)
