National Poetry Day October 6, 2008

Posted by Law Upper in : P7 , trackback

This coming Friday (10th) isn’t just the day we break up for our October Week (hooray!), it’s also National Poetry Day. To mark this, you are asked to read the following two poems and comment on which one you feel is most effective.
The subject of each poem is bullying/name-calling, something most of you will unfortunately have had experience of. Which of the two poems do you like best and why?
Remember to leave your first name and class and ensure your comment is of high quality. You are asked to complete this task by Friday.

Shame, by Tracey Blance

There’s a girl at school
we teased today;
made jokes, called her names.
My friends all laughed,
called it harmless fun,
said it was just a game.

Now I’m at home
feeling horrid inside,
long gone that thoughtless grin.
How will I face her
tomorrow at school?
I wish I hadn’t joined in.

It Hurts, by John Foster

It hurts when someone makes remarks
About the clothes I wear,
About the foods I refuse to eat
Or the way I cover my hair.

It hurts when someone laughs and jokes
About the way I speak.
‘Ignore them,’ says my Dad, but it’s hard
To turn the other cheek.

It hurts when someone calls me names
Because of the colour of my skin.
Everyone’s different outside
But we’re all the same within.

I like It Hurts by John Foster the best because its telling you the story of what its like to be bullied.

2. Lucy 7a - October 6, 2008

I think that the first poem is really effective. I think it is effective because I like how it uses uncomplicated words that are easy to understand which make you actually feel what the person is feeling like. I also like the way it is written by the child who is the bully to put it from their point of view and to understand what they are feeling.

3. Amy 7B - October 6, 2008

:]

6. Sylvie 7A - October 6, 2008

I liked both of them because the first explains what it feels like to bully and the second one explain what feels like to be bullied. I think they are both very effective because you can understand the words well and tell what the people are feeling.

7. Eilidh P7c - October 6, 2008

I like ‘it hurts’ because the exact thing happened to me.
I dont like getting bullied and I know others dont either.’It hurts’ is really affective because we all are the same within.

8. Beth 7c - October 6, 2008

I like the first one the best because the person that was bullying the other person was feeling really guilty and horrible because she bullied the person. The poem is trying to say you will feel horrible if you bully someone and never ever bully someone.

9. Rebecca 7A - October 6, 2008

I liked the second better than the first because it’s easy to see the point it’s trying to say and it does hurt when someone bullies you because of your colour, language, because we all are the same within.

10. Riccardo 7B - October 6, 2008

I like ‘It Hurts’ by John Foster because it tells you what you really feel like when you are bullied and it can make the bulliers feel bad because they might think that others can do it to them and they don’t want to feel bad like the victims.

My favourite poem was ‘It Hurts’ by John Foster. (The second one).I liked it more because it tells you what people tease and ‘joke’ about to you. It says about clothes, the things you dislike to eat, your hair, the way that you speak, colour of skin (racism) and they call you names.
