P7 Go Back In Time November 27, 2007
Posted by smacniven in : Term 2 2007, visits , trackbackAll four primary 7 classes took a trip into “Auld Reekie” this week. They visited Holyrood Palace and learned all about the life of Mary Queen of Scots then braved the security checks at the new Scottish Parliament to have a good look in the debating chamber which everyone had lots of opinions on.
This was followed by a historic Royal Mile Trail with stops at the Canongate Kirk to find the graves of Riccio stabbed 56 times, Robert Ferguson, hero of Rabbie Burns and Clarinda, Rabbie Burns` great love. They also stopped to see where the old wall used to surround the city at World`s End Pub. Continuing on past the house of John Knox, the Tron Kirk, Mercat Cross and investigating where the old Tollbooth used to house all the prisoners. Breezing past Deacon Brodie`s Tavern who inspired the novel “Jekyll and Hyde”, Gladestone`s land and the close behind gave them a glimpse of life in the 1700s. On up past the Tollbooth Kirk with it`s 75m spire and stopping to look at the Witches Well commemorating the 3oo witches who were strangled and burnt there before ffinally ending up at the castle…Phew! An exhausting and fascinating insight into the historic past of Edinburgh.

Mary was born in tragic circumstances - the death of her father made her a queen at six days old. As she was only a baby, all the Scottish Lords helped her run Scotland. In 1548, King Henry VIII
Of England attacked Scotland, determined to force Mary to marry his son, Edward. So Mary was sent to France for her own safety her mother, Mary of Guise, looked after Scotland, and she was later married to Lord Dauphin, the future King of France. Unfortunately, a year after their marriage he died of an earache so Mary returned to the British throne filled with grief for him and her mother who had passed away. Looking for help she married Lord Darnley who wasn’t as nice as he seemed when they first met. He brutally murdered her Italian secretary, David Rizzio, by stabbing him 56 times in the heart. The Earl of Bothwell, who then forced Mary to marry him to increase his level of importance and political power, then secretly strangled him. The marriage caused an outrage with the Scottish lords. Corpses would have involved too
Much effort and besides the fresher bodies they delivered to professor Knox the better. Burke and Hare were Irish. When the two immigrants moved to Edinburgh to work on the union canal but didn’t meet until Burke moved to Leith into a boarding house. Log ‘s lodgings in Tanners Close in West Port,

THE PLAGUE
The plague was a disease that was passed around by rats and small insects. Over 20 million people died in Europe in the 1340s because of it. Some of the symptoms were…
Pus-filled boils would cover the body, very bad pneumonia, vomiting and terrible chest pain.
Victims of the plague were bricked up (trapped) inside the passages of Mary Kings Close, so that they wouldn’t infect the healthy people of Edinburgh. Most people who caught the “Black Death” died within days of getting infected by it. Most of the dead corpses were just thrown into mass graves, huge holes with no memorials or coffins.
John Knox
Llittle is known about his life up to 1544, other than that he was born in Haddington and studied briefly at university before going on to practice law and enter into minor orders.
Already a Lutheran by this time, his support of the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546 led to his imprisonment for 18 months.
After the death of the protestant King, Edward VI in 1553, with whom he had gained favour, and in response to the accession of his Catholic sister, Knox travelled the continent in the following years.
In 1558, he published ‘First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women’, in which he declared, “..to promote a woman to bear rule, superiority.

The plague started due to fleas and bacteria carried
by rats. The efects of the plague were the worst bit

weakness then it would get worse by a rapid onset
pheumoniawith shortness of breath chest pain a
cough and they would be sick all the time then it
would get much worse the person’s body would get

Under Edinburgh is a labyrinth of streets were
the people with the plague were left to rot to try and contain it.
Lord Darnley
Of both Stewart and Tudor blood,Henry Sewart(Lord Darnley) was a main clamaint to both Scotland and England’s throne’s.
His main ambition in this respect coupled with poltical naivety and inpetitude would lead to his murder. The marige of Stewart to Mary Queen of Scots was, from his point of veiw, a poltical expendincy therefore matter. Since it gave him them mutual calm to the Scottish and English throne’s.Darnley soon revealed his self-interest and weakness by murdering David Rizzio Mary’s Italian secretary, out of jelousy He threatened several times to either leave the country or divorce Mary. One day however he fell ill before he could act on his threats.
Mary took him to a house at Kirk o’ Feild to convalesce under her supervison. On 9th Febuary 1567,his house was destroyed in an explosion. However he was found outside strangled to death, not burnt at all.
Lord Darnley
(1545-1567)
Henry Stewart,Lord Darnley,of both Stewart and Tudor blood was a main
claimant to the thrones of Scotland and England.
His ambition in this respect coupled political naivety and ineptitude lead him to his downfall and to why he murdered Rizzio (in Holyrood Palace) , Mary Queen of Scots Itailian secratary. In 1565 he married Mary Queen of Scots but the marrage did not last long , as Mary found out.She thought he was lovely to begin with but things went down hill as 2 years after the marrage to Mary Queen of Scots,he was blown up in his sick bed in a house in Edinburgh amazingly 40 yards away (in the garden)he was found not burnt or scratched or dead.
SEAN CONNERY (1930-present) Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh in 1930, and leaving school at 13, occupied a variety of jobs from bricklayer and milkman to model and body-builder. His career path started when he joined the chorus line in a West End production of South Pacific in 1951. The first big break came in 1962 when he was cast as James Bond in the film Dr No. Although paid a mere £15,000 for this work (an established actor of the time may have cost £1,000,000), he became strongly identified with the persona of his suave and sophisticated character. He continued to star as 007 throughout the sixties, though appeared in other films such as The Man Who Would Be King, and Marnie. After leaving the role of James Bond he diversified into a greater range of parts, winning a BAFTA for The Name of the Rose and an Oscar for The Untouchables in the same year, 1987. She died in 1587 aged 44 after being beheaded on the orders of her cousin Elizabeth 1.
Holyrood Palace
Holyrood Palace is now used as a house that the royal family uses when they come to Scotland but in the time of Mary Queen of Scots it was built to protect her. Holyrood Palace has exellent tapestries round the building and portraits. It has had terrible moments though when Lord Darnley and his men came in and took David Rizzio when he was playing cards with Mary Queen of Scots and stabbed him 56 times and made Mary watch it all. One part of Holyrood Palace is about 500 years old and the other is about 350 years old.
HOLYROOD PALACE
Holyrood Palace is now used as a house for the whole royal family when they come to Edinburgh and when people get M.B.E’s or O.B.E’s. In 1543 (when Mary Queen of Scots was crowned) Holyrood palace was built as a place to protect Mary Queen of Scots. When she married Lord Darnley Mary and David Rizzio (her secretery) were in her bedroom. Lord Darnley told some people about the secret passageway to her bedroom. They used it and went to her bedroom then stabbed David Rizzio 56 times and forced Mary to watch. Lord Darnley thought she would die watching the stabbing so he would have more power but she didn’t.Mary didn’t like sitting at the end of her table she prefered to sit in the middle so she could have a chat to her guests.

The trip to the Royal Mile was alot of fun! ,in our class we had to try and find famous sights I was focusing on finding a red tour bus it was very hard as most of them were green eventually Miss Allan found it.The debating chamber was much bigger than I thought …
The trip to the royal mile was great fun !!!
I realy liked going to HOLYROOD palace and seeing Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlies real HAIR!!!
Going to the Parliament was good fun as well ( the gift shop was fun to).
Mary Stuart became queen of Scots when she was one week old. She could have been Queen of France but when her husband the Dauphin died she came back to Scotland. Because Mary’s mother had been a Tudor she felt she was entitled to become the queen of England instead of Elizabeth There were lots of arguments and battles over the years between Mary and Elizabeth ending with Mary being beheaded by Elizabeth at Fotheringay Castle. The fascinating outcome of all this was that since Elizabeth had no children and Mary had the one son, James, when Elizabeth died James became James the VI of Scotland, and James I of Britain.
Mary Queen Of Scotts
Mary queen of scotts was born on the 8th December 1542. She was crowned queen at only 6 days old! When she was 5 years old she was sent to France for her own safety(Scotland were getting attacked
at the time). While she was over there she married the Dauphin of France in 1558. But sadly he died so Mary came back over to Scotland. Soon after she married her 2nd husband Lord Darnly. He was very jealous of Mary’s secratary David Rizzio so dragged him out the room and stabbed him 56 times! A little bit later Mary’s followers blow up his home but he manged to escape , but they found him and strangled him. In the same year Mary married her 3rd husband, the Earl of Bothwell. Soon after she married Bothwell Mary got put in prison for trying to kill her cousin Elizabeth. Mary was in prison forr 20 years untill Elizabeth decided that Mary should be beheaded. Mary was beheaded at Fotheringay Castle. But because Elizabeth had no children Mary’s son James became James 1 of Britain.
Bonnie Prince Charlie
Bonnie Prince Charlie was supposed to be the Prince of England but his father was chucked of the throne for being a Roman Catholic.
He had many different names Charles Edward Stuart a.k.a Bonnie Prince Charlie a.k.a The Young Pretender a.k.a The Young Chevalier. His Dad was James Francis Edward Stuart. His Grandad was James II of England. He was born December 31 1720. He went all the way up Britain looking for people to support him(Jacobites). For many years he wanderd Europe, secretly visiting London in 1750 and 1754.He attempted, without much succses, to get people to support his cause. In 1766, on his fathers death, he returned to Italy were he spent his last years.Charles died in Rome on January 31,1788.
Bonnie Prince Charlie was born in 1720 and died in 1788. He was also called “The young pretender” but his real name was Charles Edward Stuart. His Grand father, Catholic King James ll was deposed by Protestant King William of Orange in 1688. Bonnie Prince Charlie’s father, James Francis Edward, went away to France to gather forces to regain the thrown again, but was unsuccessful. Bonnie Prince Charlie wanted the thrown for his father so he began to build an army of people who wanted a Scottish king back on the throne. These people were called the Jacobites. Bonnie Prince Charlie eventually got an army big enough to march up to the highlands of Scotland and get the clans to join their army. When they had a sufficient amount of men they marched down to England where they were to meet some French and English allies. Sadly none came. This meant they were outnumbered 5 to 1against the goverment army. They fought the famous battle of Culloden and lost miserably. So they were forced to go back to the Highlands and take refuge. Bonnie Prince Charlie escaped to Skye dressed as a woman and then back to France. From there he spent the rest of his days as… a drunkard!
Mary Queen of scots
In 1561, Mary, Queen of Scots, upset the applecart of the Protestant Reformation. Her husband, Francois II, King of France had died unexpectedly, and the Scots were more than a little surprised by the sudden appearance of Mary’s ship at Leith’s port. Since 1542, Scotland had been ruled by a series of regents acting in Mary’s name. By 1560, The Lords of the Congregation had overthrown the power of Mary’s mother, Mary of Guise, and created a provisional government, but now she returned, bringing with her the glamour and authority of Scotland’s royal court, and drawing nobles, both Catholic and Protestant, to its intrigues.

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS.
The person who I found most intresting through this topic is Mary Queen of Scots. Mary was born in the royal palace at Linithgow near Edinburgh. Her father died when she was only a few days old. she was only a small baby but also the Queen of Scotland. When she was only nine months old she was crowned but she was obviously far too young to rule so The Earl of Lennox took over until she was old enough.
HOLLYROOD PALACE
I found out a lot from Hollyrood Palace and most of it was quite interesting, like the longest room in Hollyrood Palace is over 45 metres long. King James the 2nd extended the Palace. It was first built to protect the people inside. He changed it so that it was more comfortable Even now the Royal Family still use it when they visit Edinburgh. In King James’s extension he ordered loads of lovely rooms to be built but never stayed in them. His brother took the comfort of staying in the gorgeous rooms (most of which are still not finished). If he was to hold a meeting then he would hold it in his bedroom!!! In those times to be invited into a member of the Royal Family’s bedroom would be like being regognised as the Prime Minister of Great Britain (if you want to be).
Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots was born at Linlithgow Palace (West Lothian) on the 8th December 1542. She became Queen of Scotland when she was only 6 days old. Mary’s claims to the throne of England were almost as strong as her claims to the Scottish throne because she was next in line after her grandad. Mary was finally excuted at Fotheringhay Castle in Northamtonshire on the 8th February 1587. She was buried in Peterborough Cathedral but in 1612 her son James VI got her body exhumed and placed her in the vault of King Henry VII chapel in Westminster Abbey.
HOLYROOD PALACE
The first part of Holyrood Palace was built nearly 500 hundred years ago, the second part 350 years ago. It was originally built for Queen Mary’s protection and was her home when she returned from France. When Mary married her second husband, Lord Darnley, he just wanted power. When Mary became pregnant Lord Darnley and some Scottish nobles set out to get rid of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio, as they believed that Mary was getting too close. The party dragged Rizzio from the room in which he and Mary had been playing cards and stabbed him 56 times. Mary was forced to watch this horrific sight in the hope that she would die of shock. Fortunately Mary survived and had her son James. Holyrood is now open to the public and you can visit the sight of this murder. The biggest room in the palace is the gallery, which is 42m long. In this room there is hundreds of portraits of the royal family, all painted by the same artist. The room can seat 300 guests for dinner if needed, so it is very large.
Visiting the palace was the most exciting part of the trip for me.
Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots was born on the 8th of December at Linlithgow Palace. Her Father died six days after her birth and she was crowned Queen of Scotland at the age of one! She was to young to rule the country so she had the Earl of Lennox take her place until she was old enough. When she was 15 she got married to the Duaphin of France and he was 14 years old. Sadly he died of a ear infection and that long ago they couldn’t deal with it. Mary returned to Scotland a year after her marraige. When she got back she noticed the differents between Scotland and France and Scotland was a lot more cold and stinky. Her second marraige was to a horrible man Lord Darnley who wanted the thrown. He was jealous of Rizzio Mary’s mucisian so one day he came up to Mary’s room and dragged Rizzio through to the other room and stabbed him 56 times. ( Oh what a nice man ).
Mary Queen of Scotts
Mary was born on the 8th of December 1542. She became Queen of Scotland when she was only 6 days old. At the age of 15 she married the Dauphin Francis who sadly died after 17 months of their marriage. That meant Mary became Queen of not just Scotland but also of France. She married twice after that to her cousin Henry Stuart (Lord Darnley) and lastly to James Hepburn (Earl of Bothwell.) Mary had only one child who was called James and was born on the 19th of June1556. Mary came to a gruesam end and was beheaded at the age of 45 on the 8th of February 1587.
John Knox
Not very much is known about John Knoxs life until 1544 apart from he was born in haddington and he studied in university for a short amount of time. By this time he was already a Lutheran but his support of the Cardinal Beaton murder in 1546 led to his 18 month imprisonment. After the death of the protestant king in 1553 ,Edward VI,whose favour John had gained, John started to travel the continent. In 1558 he published his book’First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monsterous Regiment of Women’in which he said to promote a women to bear rule, superitory, dominion or empire above any realm is repugnant to nature ,contrary to God,and is the subervision of good order,of all equlty and justice. The joyless system of church discipline he bequethed to the country coupled with his spiteful and dictatorial personality made him a very difficult man to like.
Looking back on my work I have made some spelling mistakes - oops! I better check it properly next time.
I really enjoyed the Edinburgh trip. It was really fun to walk down the Royal Mile and learn lots of intresting facts about bulidings I hadn’t really noticed before.
Willem Burke & Willem Hare
they were murderers that killed people to give to the surgen in Edinburgh and were body snachers and plundered graves in Edinbugh to get at them to the surgen aswell as killing people!
Mary Queen of Scots
Mary was born on December 8th 1542
She was crowned king of Scotland when she was 9 months old!
She got married 3 times but only had 1 child (a son) James I or James VI.
Her 2nd husband called Lord Darnley wanted Mary dead so he tried to kill her by fright so he stabbed her Italian secretery Rizzio 56 times. She was forced to watch but she never died so Darnley fled.
Mary flew to englan hoping Queen Elizebeth would help her however Elizabeth imprisoned her for 19 years before she got executed in 1587 aged 44.
ROBERT BURNS
Robert Burns was born in January 1759 in Alloway. He is one of Scotlands most famous poets. He was born into poverty and didn’t have much formal schooling, being taught to read and write, with his 7 brothers and sisters, by his father. Some of his most famous works are Auld Lang Syne often sung at New Years, A Red Red Rose and To a Mouse. He claims that Robert Furgusson was the influence for all his work.He died in July of 1796 having written over 200 ballads and poems.
DAVID RIZZIO
David Rizzio was born in 1533 and died in 1566.
He was a private secretary of Mary Queen Of Scots and a supposed lover of Mary.
Before he became a secretary for Mary, he was an excellent singer and musician which first brought him to Mary’s attention.
The worst part of David Rizzio life is when he got grabbed out of the Queen’s special dining room and taken into another room. The Queen was forced to watch him get stabbed by her 2nd husband Lord Darnley, who along with a couple of other men stabbed Rizzio him 56 times causing him to die.
It was purposely done because there was a rumour that Rizzio and the Queen were having an affair when Lord Darnley was married to her.
DECON BRODIE
Decon Brodie was a well respected citizen of old Edinburgh. He was a cabinet maker and of top perfession aswell. When his father died the family buisness passed down to him along with £10,000. This money should have set him up for his life but he used it wrongly.
Decon Brodie had some bad habits though, like drinking and gamballing. His expensive life used up alot of money so he started to rob houses and businesses around to get more money. Unfortuatly when he tried to rob the excise office somebody recognised him so he fled. He eventually was caught, sentenced and hanged.
The Netherbow Port (’Nether’ means furthest and ‘Port’ means Gateway.
The Netherbow Port was a large gatehouse between the High Street and the Canongate. The gates, along with the old city wall, enclosed the city and its citizens from the Canongate and beyond would have to pay to get in. Poorer people in the city couldn’t leave because they couldn’t pay to come back in, so they stayed in their whole lives. The place inside the Netherbow gate became known as the World’s End because for many people this was where their world ended. There is still a pub in this place called the World’s End.
MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS
Mary Queen Of Scots claimed the crowns of four nations,Scotland, France ,England and Ireland. She was the cousin of Elizabeth 1 of England and although Mary wanted Elizabeth to help her, the two of them never met each other. Mary was crowned queen before her 1st birthday. Mary was imprisioned for 19 years then beheaded at the age of 44 years old.
Burke and Hare
William Burke and William Hare are two of Scotland’s well known murderers. They were both Irish imigrants and they sold the body’s to Proffeser Knox. They killed people by smothering them with a cushion,(which was later known as burking) though many peoply still believe they were grave-robbers. They killed 16 people and the last one was on Ha’lloween. Burke was caught and hanged, his skin used to bind a book. Hare was let off

I thought the trip to “Auld Reekey” (Edinburgh) was really good fun !! I thought that Rizzio was really interesting because he was a very shy but a talented man because he was very musical which Mary (Mary Queen of scots) liked. This made her husband, Lord Darnley jealous and he and some of his men decided to kill Rizzio. They came into the room which Mary and Rizzio were in. They dragged Rizzio into the room next door and killed him. He was stabbed 56 times!!! As they killed Rizzio they made Mary watch him die so Mary would die of shock as Rizzio got stabbed!! Thankfully Mary did’nt die!! Back then some people had really tough lives!!!!!!!

Later on she had two more marriges which both went terribly wrong. She married Lord Darnley and the Earl of Bothwell. ROBERT FERGUSSON
Robert Fergusson was a great poet of his time. He was born in 1750 in Cap and Feather Close in the old town of Edinburgh (Auld Reekie). He has a statue of himself walking outside the Canongate Kirk where he is buried, there was a poem written by James Robertson in 2005 about Fergusson and his statue. When he died he was not very rich so he had no real headstone, but the man he inspired greatly was Robert Burns and he bought a really nice gravestone and placed it on Fergusson’s grave. Robert Fergusson died from mental illness in a public asylum in 1774. The main cause of his mental illness was a fall down a flight of steps in 1773.
The Mercat Cross -
The original Mercat Cross was built in the early 1500’s, the Cross you see today was built in 1885. It was a place where people made official announcements, business deals and watched executions take place! Today they still use the Mercat Cross to annouce General Elections and new Monarchs but not for any executions - thankfully!

The heart of Midlothian

located just to the west of St. Giles Kirk in Edinburgh is the Heart of Midlothian, which consists of a heart-shape set in the cobble-stones of the street. Despite Edinburgh having been very much the centre of Midlothian for hundreds of years, local government boundary changes in 1974 established a separation between Edinburgh and its Midlothian hinterland. The past connection between Edinburgh and Midlothian can also be seen through the old Midlothian County Chambers, located on George IV Bridge, temporarily used as a visitor centre for the new Scottish Parliament

Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots was born in 1542. Mary Queen of Scots became queen when she was just 6 days old due to her fathers untimely death. She married Dauphin Francis and became Queen of France. Unfortunately Dauphin Francis died 2 years later due to an ear infection. Her second husband was Lord Darnley who used her to regain power of the thrown. Later on Mary’s loyal followers attempted to murder Lord Darnley, for justice (An eye for an eye. A life for a life). They tried to do this by placing bombs in his house, unfortunately he ran away before they exploded, but then to finish him off he was strangled. Mary Queen of Scots was born at Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian on December 8th 1542. (In 2 days time she will be 465 years old!). At this point Mary was pregnant with her only child, James. Knowing Darnley he had all ready made a treacherous plan to try and kill 3 people! while Mary was watching Rizzio getting stabbed she could have died of shock which would make James die aswell, but luckily she and James survived.A few months later Lord Darnley was killed by getting strangled after escaping from an attempt of getting blown up. Then she married The Earl of Borthwell he was not a very nice man either so she decided that he would not be a very good king, so if Mary died he would not become King. After that she fled to England to see if Queen Elizabeth (her second cousin) would help her but Elizabeth was worried that Mary would kill her so she held her as prisoner for nearly 19 years! Then Elizabeth got Mary to be executed in 1587 aged 44.
