sherlocksmall.gifNext week Miss Nicolson from the High school Physics department will be coming in to work with primary 7. She will be doing two experiments using the following equipment:ist2_1001634_british_copper_coins_isolated.jpg   bananaberrysmoothie.jpg    balloons.gif

Empty juice bottle, copper coin, smoothie juice, diet coke and ordinary coke, yeast and balloons.

We will be looking at how healthy these drinks are. Can you predict and make suggestions about what exactly we will be doing with this equipment and why?

Miss Nicolson came in and worked with the first class. Prizes were handed out to those who had predicted correctly…watch this space.

I think that what is going to happen is she is going to mix the juices and then dip the coins in the liquid and they will be shiny. :D Then she is going to tie the bottle and the ballons together and see how far they can go. I don’t know what a yeast is but she will put it in I hope. :D :D

2. Eilidh 7D - November 20, 2007

I think the visit from Miss Nicolson will be very interesting but fun ! We have already been up to the high school to do some experiments and that was great so i am sure this experiment will be good aswell ! I think the experement will teach us about drinks and which ones are better for us , i am not sure what the balloons are for but i am sure we will find out ! :D

3. Megan 7D - November 20, 2007

I think we’re going to do one experiment by dipping the coin in the coke and leaving it after it comes out it will be shiny. Then we will repeat the experiment with diet coke and when it comes out it will be less shiny but still quite shiny. Then we will do the same with the smoothie when the coin comes out there will be no changes to it.

I think the second experiment with be filling balloons with yeast and water. I think the baloons will rise because yeast makes bread rise (I think)!!!

4. *Julia F & Iona R*7a - November 21, 2007

We are very puzzled by this experiment, but we think that we are going to dip tarnished copper coins in diffrent liquids and see what will happen to the coins.

Will they be shiny or will they be the same?

5. Neil W P7A - November 21, 2007

I think that we will try to clean the coins with the different drinks and the coke will clean it quite wellbecause of the sugar in it and because there is less sugar in diet coke and a smoothies they wont clean quite aswell. I am not sure about the baloons and yeast.

6. Riccardo P7A - November 21, 2007

I think we will try to use are drity coins and put them in are bottle that is filled with different substances to make the coin clean.

7. andrew d and gregor p 7a - November 21, 2007

we think that we are going toput the coin in the two liquids and see what happens.

8. Rory 7a - November 21, 2007

I think we are going to put the coins in a mix of the three drinks and see what happens and then put the yeast in and see if it changes.I don’t know what we’ll do with the balloons though.

9. Elizabeth M 7A - November 21, 2007

I think that we will be putting the coins in different liquids and seeing how much acid and sugar are in the drinks by looking how clean the tarnished coins are when we take them out.

i’m not sure what the balloons are for.

10. BEN P7A - November 21, 2007

It sounds really fun i think we might be filling the balloons with different fizzy drinks and then putting yeast in them to make them fizz. The gas from the drink would makethe ballon float upwards but i have absolotely no idea what the drink bottle and coin are for.

11. Chris Mc - November 21, 2007

I am looking forward to the science teachers visit, I think that we will
be seeing how bad some drinks are for us

12. cammy7A - November 21, 2007

I think we’re going to put liquid in the bottles and thenput the coins in and fill the ballons with air and tie them to the bottles.

13. Hamish A 7A - November 21, 2007

What is this experament all about,I wounder.May be were going to put the dirty coins in whis some sort of liquid to make it shiny again.

14. Maurice - November 21, 2007

I think that we are going to put the coin in three types of liquid and see what happens. Then i think we will pour some of the remaining liquid into the bottle and tie the balloon to it.

15. Alex - November 22, 2007

I think that we will dip the coin into the bottle which has different liquids inside and see if it gets clean.

16. Anya 7Dxx - November 22, 2007

I think that we will be putting the coin in the different liquids and the coke will come out shiny because it has lots of sugar in it, I think the diet coke will come out less shiny but still shiny because it has less sugar than the coke but still has lots of sugar in it and then we will put the coin in the smoothie and it won’t come out shiny because it has no sugar in it. But I have no idea what we will be doing with the yeast or the balloon! :D

17. Lucy 7D - November 22, 2007

I think we are going to put a mixture in the bottle and dip the coin in and then hope that it will get clean and I do not know how we will be using the yeast and the balloon.

18. Dennis 7D - November 22, 2007

I think that we will put some kind of liquid into the bottle and dip the coin into the bottle and the liquid will make the coin clean and shiny.
I think that the yeast will go into the ballons and the yeast should make the ballons puff up and then pop.

19. Finn 7D - November 22, 2007

I think we will put the coins in the different liquids and see what turns out the cleanest and maybe put the yeast in the liqiud to.I think the balloons will be put on top of the bottle and they might blow up.

20. Katie Woolley 7D - November 22, 2007

I am looking forword until the science it will be great! I still cant think what the bottle and the dirty coin will be about? I think we will put viniger in the bottle and shake the viniger and it will clean the coin.I think that might happen?

21. Padraig 7D - November 22, 2007

I think we’re going to put liquid in the bottle and dip the coin in and it will come out clean and shiny. I think that we’ll put yeast in the ballons and make them expand and pop.

22. Peter 7D!! - November 22, 2007

I think that miss Nikolson is going to dip the coins in the liquid and the coin will go from rusty to shiney and it will show what the acids and sugars will do to the coins and how bad some drinks are for us to drink!! Then iI think we will put the liquid that is ramaning into the bottel and they will fizz the cola up and put thev yeast in ant we will tie the baloon to the bottle and it will make the bottle float!!

23. Andrew . 7D - November 22, 2007

I think we will be puting the yeast in the balloon and adding water. Then shak it up and add the coin. When we take the coin out it will be clean.

24. COKE 7D - November 22, 2007

I think that we are going to put the coin in the bottle and put water in
the bottle and put the coin the in bottle and maby it will folut or maby we will saked the bottle and then it will clean the coin.Or maby we will try and put the coin throw the bottle and it will go in the balloon.

25. Holly 7D - November 22, 2007

I think we will put the yeast in the bottles and but a balloon over the top and the baloon will blow up.With the smoothie juice and coin Ithink we will put the coin in the juice and it will come out all shiny. It sounds very exciting.

26. katie! xx :D - November 22, 2007

I think that we will put the coin, yeast and the coke in the bottle and we will put the balloon on the top and then shake it then it will explode!xx

27. Jack Hall 7D - November 22, 2007

I think the science will be good! I am not to sure what we are going to do though? We might wrap the yeast round the coin then put coke in the baloon, put the coin and the yeast in the baloon and then the coin will go all shiny! I am really looking forword to the science. It will be fun!!!!!!!!!!

28. JOANNA 7A - November 22, 2007

I think we are going to put the coin in the bottle and then fill the bottle with different liquds then blow up the balloon and the air from the balloon will push the coin up to the top of the bottle then go into the balloon!!!

29. finlay pat 7B - November 22, 2007

i think that we will be doing this: put the coin in the bottle and fill it with water and pour it in the balloon with the coin!

30. Anonymous - November 22, 2007

I am not to sure about what we will be doing with the bottle and the coin but i think it might have something to do with shaking the bottle up and down with the coin and the liquids inside and it will make the coin shiny.I think the balloon could have something to do with the experiment exploding but i am not sure how it comes into the coin experiment!

31. iona 7b - November 22, 2007

My comment is above i forgot my name!Iona 7b

32. Hamish L 7B - November 22, 2007

You put the coke in the balloon and then you put the coin in.Then you tie the balloon up and shake it .You then untie the balloon and it will all fizz up and hopefully the coin goes flying out.

33. Henry 7B - November 22, 2007

I think we will be dropping the coin in the diet coke ,coke and smoothie to see what liquid will make the coin turn shiny i think the coke will make it the shiniest.

With the bottle yeast and balloon i think we will be putting the yeast into the bottle with the balloon on top to see if the balloon inflates.

34. Jessica7B - November 22, 2007

I’m not sure what we will be doing with the balloon and yeast but I think that we will put the coin in the coke, the diet coke and then in the smoothie to see which one will take off the tarnished part of the tarnished coin. I think it will probably be the ordinary coke because I think it has the most chemicals in it that are most likely to work.

35. finlay h 7b - November 22, 2007

for the experiment i think we will put coke in the bottle and then put the coin in then wait a couple of days then the coin will be clean and shiny

36. Eliza 7B - November 22, 2007

I think that we will add the yeast to the normal coke and other drinks to make the tarnished coin into a clean and shiny one which looks like it has been made this year. I think the coke is most likely to work because all of the sugar and other chemicals will disintegrate the dirt on the coin.

Im not to sure abut the yeast and the balloon but it could be about the yeast making the balloon float when its inside.

37. Finlay 7B - November 22, 2007

I think that we will dip copper coins ito diet coke and other drinks to see if they go shiny. If that is the case with the coins thenwhat will it do for our stomachs and health?C U L8R B BACK SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

38. Adam 7B - November 22, 2007

i think we will put the coin in the coke and yeast filled baloons and leave it for a little while and the tarnished coin will dissolve or become shiny but i think some cool will happen.

39. Shannon.H-7B - November 22, 2007

I think we will be putting the coins in the different types of drinks to see wheather the helthy smoothy makes the most impact, the diet coke or wheather the coke makes the most dramatic change.I think the coke will have the best results as it most likly has the most acid.

I’m not sure but i think the balloon and yeast might be mixed with some sort of liqued to see the chemical reaction.

40. Neil B 7B - November 22, 2007

I am not to sure what the experiment is going to be about but we might put the penny into different types of drinks and see what drink cleans it the most. No idea what the balloons are going to do!

41. SHANNON.P P7B - November 22, 2007

i think it is really nice that Mrs Nicolson has given up her own time to do this with all the p7’s.i think we will be putting the copper coins in
the coke and smoothie to see which has more impact on the coin.i also think that we will have a bottle and we will mix the yeast with some type of liquid, and then we will put the balloon over the top to catch the gasses. Therefore the balloon will blow up.

42. Tanya 7b - November 22, 2007

I think it was really nice that Mrs Nicolson gave up some of her time to come in and do science with all the P7s. I am not really sure what we’er going to do but I think we are going to clean the coins with diffrent drinks and see which one cleans it the best.I am not sure what we will be doing with a balloon, a bottle and yeast but I think we might blow the balloon up some how.I can’t wait till she comes in!!!!

43. Ciara P P7b - November 22, 2007

I think this experiment sounds so fun.I think each drink we will have to drop our coins in our bottles then put the lid on tight shake the bottle up & down , let the bottle sit for 5 mins while the coin is in then see which one turns out to be the shiniest.

After the drink’s experiment i think we will mix the yeast with some kind of other chemical then put the balloon on the lid of the bottle then see if it will blow up or change colour?????????????????????????

44. Ciara P P7b - November 22, 2007

Sorry i fergot to put this message in.

Thank you Miss Nicholson for coming to do these experiments!!!!!!!!!!

45. Blake7B - November 22, 2007

I think it is great that we have someone to come in and do some experiments with us. Im not really sure what were going to do though. It might be that we put the coin in the bottle and put vinegar or any liquid or something in it like that and maybe the coin will be really clean after a few minutes of it being in the bottle and i think that we will put yeast in a tub and put the balloon over the top and maybe the balloon will blow up.

46. Chris 7b - November 23, 2007

I am really looking forward to doing the science thing with the lady from the high school. I think we might put the coin in a bottle of coke and it will turn the coin shiny. If were using both types of coke I think it will be the ordinary coke because it had lots of chemicles and more weak acids. I don’t know what we’re going to do with the yeast or the ballons.

47. megan 7b - November 23, 2007

I think that we will put the drink into the bottle but the cion because we might dip it in and it might go shinny. With the balloon i think we will put the yeast into the balloon and tie it up and it might blow up.

48. Finlay Pr - November 23, 2007

I think the experiment will be good fun. I think we will drop our coins in all the drinks and then after we pull them out if the coin is still the same then it is not very healthy but if the coin is shiny then it is a bit healthy.

i think the second experiment will be about putting are coin into the empty bottle and then we blow up the ballon and cover the top of the bottle and the pressure will make the coin rise.

i dont know what the yeast is for.

49. Miss Nicholson - November 23, 2007

Some excellent ideas here guys! I’m looking forward to Monday too. Someone will get a prize on Monday because they’ve worked out what we’ll be doing!

50. Ellen P7A - November 24, 2007

I am guessing we will be trying to clean the tarnished coin and something else as well. I am looking forward to it and so I hope that it will be good.

51. Eva P7A - November 24, 2007

I think we will be putting a copper coin in the juices and if it looks cleaner the drink has a lot of sugar in it, but if it looks the same it has not a lot of sugar in it or no sugar at all. I don’t know what the balloons and yeast are for?

52. Annie P7A - November 24, 2007

I think the Science Sleuth will be putting coins into different liquids to see what happens to the coins.

53. Julia Mc P7A - November 24, 2007

We might dip the copper coin into the coke and then see what happens to it.
