Posted by smacniven in : Parents Evenings, Term 1 2007/08 , trackback

Well this week sees  Primary 7 pupils attending parents evenings with their parents for the first time. So how did they get on? All the P7 teachers think it has been a huge success.

They will share their feelings and experiences here and are currently compiling podcasts of these too. We would appreciate any feedback from parents on how they thought it went. p7d-who-went-to-parents-evening.mp3

This is P7A’s podcast about Parents Evenings, we hope you enjoy listening to it. p7a-parents-nights.mp3

1. Class 7B - October 11, 2007

Parents’ Night went very well. It was a bit nerve-racking and weird but we got through it fine and our parents thought it was an amazing idea.

2. Neil & Simone Anderson - Ewan's mum & dad. - October 11, 2007

Thought the approach worked very well. We really liked that with Ewan involved it felt a lot more like he was taking responsibility for what was agreed of what is expected of him. Great use of technology with the class photos!

We think the blog is a good way of getting the children to use new technology and it might be an idea to use it as another place for parents to look up school information - such as holiday dates etc.

3. Callum's DAD - October 11, 2007

I do not think that it is good idea for the child to accompany the parent on ‘parents night’ because I believe there should be privacy to allow a truthful discussion to take place. If the child was present the teacher could feel inhibited and therefore the true pcture may not emerge.

4. Rob McMahon - October 11, 2007

I thought the P7 parents evening was an unqualified success. The idea of allowing the pupils to self assess seems to me to be an excellent innovation. It let us get a really clear insight into how Fergus was finding P7 and also seemed to be a useful step towards accurate self assessment for him, and he really seemed to be happy about making a contribution - not easy in front of both parents and teachers!
Well done everyone involved!
PS the amount of work all the P7s have managed to complete this term is truly brilliant!

5. Catrionas Stewarts Dad - October 11, 2007

I thought it was a interesting format however I am not sure that it is suitable for P7’s or any Primary School children.

6. Darrin Fowler - October 11, 2007

I am looking forward to parents evining because i will be in the interview. My mum and dad think it will be great.

7. Anonymous - October 11, 2007

HENRY’S MUM

I thought it was a good idea to allow the children to be present at the parents evening, enabling them to discuss with both parents and teacher how they felt about their progress so far in P7. I also think some time should still be available for parent and teacher consultation without the child present.

8. Gary's Mum - October 11, 2007

I think that Gary did well and explained confidently on how his progress in all subjects in P7. We feel that he has done very well so far and is ready for the challenges of Highschool.

9. Finn's Mum - October 11, 2007

I though that it was a very good idea to have Finn with us during parent’s night as we were able to have a full and frank discussion with all interested parties. It is a positive step towards confidence building and allows each child to contribute fully by encouraging them to express their views about progress.

The weblog is an excellent idea as it has certainly encouraged my children to comment on various items and they are keen to bring matters to my attention.

10. Tanya's dad - October 11, 2007

I thought that the parents night involving Tanya was a great success. I was surprised that I was not invloved as much as on previous occassions but this is certainly not a critism. And my contribution was welcomed by Mrs lima. The whole object is the education of our children and making them the centre of the assesment seems blatently obvous. I think that it is important that there is a structure to the interview so as to obtain consistent feedback for the teacher which I am pleased to say was evident from Mrs Lima’s approach. Tanya found the success criteria very helpful in understanding the purpose of the lesson and encouraged her to focus on the key issues. I hope that this is picked up by Mrs Lima and reinforced during the remainder of the educational year. 

11. Ciaran's Mum and Dad - October 11, 2007

It was lovely to hear from Ciaran as to how he was progressing in the year. Mrs McNiven’s encouragement helped a lot and she allowed him to take responsibility for his achievements and discuss how he sees the year ahead.
Maybe the second Parent’s Evening is the one where we could have 5 minutes with the Teacher alone, but this was timed just right and Ciaran enjoyed being part of it.

12. Darrens Mum - October 11, 2007

I think its a good idea to have darren at parents night as its is good to get darren envolved in discussing his progress in front of ourselves and his teacher .I think it makes the pupil more aware of the steps they need towards high school.

13. Clara's Dad - October 11, 2007

It was interesting to hear the pupil talking with the teacher present, however it would have been useful to have a discussion without the pupil, a bit of both would perhaps be the best compromise.

14. Anonymous - October 11, 2007

Ethan’s mum
Although I think this was an interesting way to conduct parents evening, it would have perhaps been better to have had more of an indication of the format of the discussion, as it was difficult to judge just how much the parents contribution was supposed to be. It’s great getting the kids involved and undertaking elements of self analysis and I’m sure it will help them focus on and develop areas that were discussed. Ethan feels that although it was good to hear what was being said about him, it was also a bit embarrassing!
The weblog is an excellent use of technology to gain feedback from parents for future use.

15. Anonymous - October 11, 2007

It was great to have interaction between parent, pupil and teacher though I did feel as though I was there more as a witness to what the teacher and pupil wanted to say to each other rather than as an active participant! Elizabeth liked being able to make comments to the teacher.

16. Alex's Mum - October 11, 2007

I think that involving pupils in a discussion with their teacher and parents is a good idea for P7s as it recognises their maturity and allows them to assess how they are doing. I was very impressed by how much work the class has done already this year.

17. Dennis' Mum - October 11, 2007

I thought it was an excellent idea to have Dennis present at parents night as he always quizzes me about what the teacher has to say about him. Being involved in discussions about what he has achieved and what his aims are for P7 gave him a sense of pride in his work and boosted his confidence a great deal.
Seeing Dennis interacting with his teacher was also an interesting insight into their teacher/pupil relationship.
The weblog/website is handy for giving feedback and catching up on whats going on in the school.

18. David (megan 7d's dad) - October 11, 2007

I wasn’t sure how having the pupil at the meeting would affect our discussion. Overall I think it is a positive innovation. I think it enhanced both the meeting and the prospects for working together through the rest of the year. However, there probably still needs to be an opportunity to have a discussion without the pupil present otherwise busy teachers may just be asked for an extra meeting!

19. Josie's mum 7C - October 11, 2007

It was nice to hear from Josie although she was a bit nervous to start with, but then relaxed and had some good comments. She has obviously been thinking about what she has learned and how she has done at school. She recognised her strengths and things she needs to work on.I was pleased to get feedback from her maths set, which we have not had before in such detail. This method is a good way of boosting the children’s self esteem and confidence and the format worked well. Although I felt I would have liked to contribute to the discussion more.Josie also enjoyed showing us around the classroom and we liked the slide show.We enjoyed the evening and are delighted she is doing so well and has settled into P7.

I think the web blog is great, very informative and well presented,it looks fun.Its a great way to see what’s happening in the school.

20. Finlay Pratt's mum and dad - October 11, 2007

It was nice to hear Finlay identifying with his work at school but the main purpose of the evening is to hear from the teacher how they think the child is getting on and therefore some time should be allocated without the child present.

21. Anonymous - October 11, 2007

megans mum and dad.we think that it was a good idea to the next step to high school and it was nice for the children to put there view forward about there work .

22. megans mum and dad - October 11, 2007

we think that it was a good idea to the next step to high school and it was nice for the children to put there view forward about there work .

23. Iona Rs Mum & Dad - October 11, 2007

We thought it was a good idea and good to hear pupils comments too. It was a very open discussion and nothing hidden from the pupil.

24. Chris R's mum - October 11, 2007

A worthwhile experiment. However, I think the main purpose of parents’ evening should be an opportunity for the parent to discuss the child’s progress with the teacher and raise any issues they wish to discuss. I felt largely a spectator to an awkward interview which could have taken place without me.

25. Andrew's Mum & Dad 7D - October 11, 2007

We really enjoyed the experience of hearing Andrew and his teacher discuss how P7 has gone so far and felt it was the best parents night we have ever attended at Law.

26. Andrew's Mum and Dad - October 12, 2007

We feel Andrew’s involvement at parent’s night was constructive but another time it could be useful to have time alone for the parent’s with the teacher. We ‘re impressed with the amount of work already done this term.

27. Julia McM P7a and Mum - October 12, 2007

We both thought the idea of Julia coming with us was informative
and interesting. It was good to be able to go through Julia’s
work with her at her desk and have her explain what they have
been doing, and also showing us the work around the classroom.

The meeting with the teacher and Julia was also interesting with
Julia being able to participate and discuss her work at home and
in class.

I think the blog is interesting and a good idea. Julia enjoys writing
her comments on it.

28. Jessie & Katie =] xxx kl kl - October 12, 2007

30. Finlay's mum and dad - 7D - October 22, 2007

Interesting but not necessary to see how the teacher and pupil interact as it is not a true reflection of the classroom situation.

Would prefer the majority of the ‘interview’ to be between parent and teacher with inclusion from the child when necessary.

Suspect some children would find the format daunting but it is good to try something new and it is a taster for the children for High School Parents Evenings.

Believe parent/teacher only time is necessary.

What did the teachers think?

The weblog has certainly developed since I last saw it. I probably still rely on info coming direct from the school (all of which I do read!!). It is great to be able to share certain events with Finlay who will draw my attention to the site when new postings have been made, eg podcasting

31. chloes mum - March 5, 2008
