Reading Poetry group homework January 25, 2010
Posted by Law Middle in : Uncategorized , 22commentsIn tomorrow’s lesson we will be studying the following two poems; `The Fly’ and `The Toaster’. We will be thinking about the words that the poet has chosen and why he decided to use these words in particular. Your task is to read these two poems and choose your favourite line from one of them.
Your homework tonight is to leave a comment on this post with:
1) Your favourite line
2) Why do you like this line in particular?
3) Please write your name at the bottom of your comment.
The Toaster by William Jay Smith
A silver-scaled Dragon with jaws flaming red
Sits at my elbow and toasts my bread.
I hand him fat slices, and then, one by one,
He hands them back when he sees they are done.
The Fly by Walter de la Mare
How large unto the tiny fly
Must little things appear!-
A rosebud like a feather bed,
Its prickle like a spear;
A dewdrop like a looking-glass,
A hair like a golden wire;
The smallest grain of mustard seed
As fierce as coals of fire;
A loaf of bread, a lofty hill;
A wasp, a cruel leopard;
And specks of salt as bright to see
As lambkins to a shepherd.
Review of the Week in 5B January 22, 2010
Posted by Law Middle in : Uncategorized , 3commentsIn 5B it has been an active week. Here are some of our memories of what we have been doing and learning about this week:
- We were visited by Mr McNeil, the ex headteacher, who told us more about the history of North Berwick.
- In drama we reinacted some historical moments from North Berwick’s past.
- We drew animals for the forthcoming launch of a Scots ABC book.
- We learned about maps and made our own Law model from cardboard, using contour lines.
Things we are looking forward to next week: - Watching the poem recitals
- Golden Time next week and the Star of the week election.
Have a great weekend from all of 5B.
Thoughts of Home January 21, 2010
Posted by smacniven in : Uncategorized , 43commentsPrimary 5 are in full swing with their North Berwick topic. As part of this we have invited Mr McNeil (our ex Headteacher) into school to talk about the wonderful song he wrote for the school, as we look closely at the content of this during our project.
Pupils in primary 5 are going to share two things that they learned from this talk and one thing they really found interesting.
Poetry homework January 18, 2010
Posted by Law Middle in : Uncategorized , 27commentsToday my group have been studying the use of imagery in poetry, through the use of metaphors and similes. Just as a reminder a metaphor is an idea that compares two ideas or objects and a simile does the same thing but it always uses the words `like’ or `as’.
Using our notes from today’s class your task is to create your own animal poem, using metaphors and/or similes. Your poem should be at least 5 lines long.
When you have completed it please type post it as a comment to this message. This way we can share our work with each other.
Good Luck, Miss Brodie
P5B New Year goals January 13, 2010
Posted by smacniven in : Uncategorized , 2commentsFollowing a chilly start to the term, everyone has returned to class full of enthusiasm for 2010. Personally I am thrilled to be joining P5B; they are a fantastic class (but shhhh…. don’t tell them!).
In class we have been learning more about New Year’s Resolutions as we have been making our own for the forthcoming year. We learned that January is named after the Roman God Janus who had two faces; one looked to the future and the other looked to the past. Therefore, it seemed an appropriate time to thing about our own goals for our school work. P5B have created their own school goal in the form of a two page animated powerpoint presentation. I hope that you enjoy them and good luck P5B, Miss Brodie.

What Scotland is made of! November 30, 2009
Posted by Law Middle in : Uncategorized , 62commentsToday, Primary 5b have been thinking about Scotland and what it means to be Scottish. We have enjoyed many different activities as part of our St. Andrew’s Day celebration, which have helped us to explore our Scottish identities.
As part of this we began writing our special recipes on what we think Scotland (or a Scottish person) is made of. Please have a look in the comments section for our guide to the ingredients you will need!
Beach Clean Event! November 27, 2009
Posted by smacniven in : Uncategorized , 22commentsWell our first Beach clean went ahead as scheduled yesterday, despite the adverse weather conditions. All 30 pupils involved, wrapped up warm and dry, accompanied by our parent volunteers, the Ranger and Mrs Wilson, they swept the West beach armed with gloves, bags for rubbish and litter pickers. All the findings were tallied and will be collated and submitted to the Marine Conservation Society to be considered in their national findings. Well done to all involved for their support and commitment to the project as part of our John Muir Award this session. Watch this space for another update next term.

All about Limericks November 23, 2009
Posted by Law Middle in : Uncategorized , 28commentsToday, Primary 5 have been reading and writing limericks. We enjoyed reading the poems written by the old Primary 5s who are now in Primary 6. Limericks are five line poems that usually have a funny ending. The first, second and fifth lines rhyme, as do the third and fourth in the form AABBA.
We hope you enjoy reading our poems!
CINQUAIN POETRY November 16, 2009
Posted by Law Middle in : 2009-10, Reading Genre , 32commentsToday in our reading setting, the Primary 5 poetry group have been reading and exploring Cinquain poems. Just like Haiku, Cinquain is a form of poetry that has a fixed number of syllables. A Cinquain poem has 5 lines:
The first line must have 2 syllables,
the second line must have 4 syllables,
the third line has 6 lines,
the fourth line has 8 syllables
and the final line finishes with 2 syllables.
Like a Haiku poem, your poem should not normally rhyme.
Here is a poem we wrote together in class:
Weekend
No school today
Play football in the park on Sunday
You can go swimming with your friends
It’s fun!
Please have a look at some of the Cinquain P5 have written in the comments. They have chosen to write a poem exploring the themes of friendship, winter, anti-bullying, the seashore or Y Dance.
