You`re in for a big surprise…. All primary 5 pupils had a wonderful time in the Whisky bottle wood today with their storyteller Daniel, who brought to life tales of John Muir`s travels in the wilderness, his encounters with bears and snakes and adventures with his faithful dog Stickeen. The scene was certainly set in our woodland clearing with the sounds of leaves falling, birds, wind and nature all around us.

We had an important and interesting visit today from the coastguard as part of our coastlines project. We have been learning about seashore safety and it was really important to hear about the important job they do and how we can keep ourselves safe at the beach. We really enjoyed it and would like to say a big thank you.

You can learn more about them and the RNLI by clicking on the links.

Once again primary 5 are in pursuit of the prestigious John Muir Award and this year their focus is on pollution. They will be adopting a beach through the Marine Conservation Society, working very closely with the Ranger and will be learning about water treatment from Mr Conlin when he visits.

In September all the primary 5 classes visited John Muirs birth place in Dunbar and learned a huge amount about the great man from the staff David and Pauline. They had lots of fun and would like to say a huge thank you to them. The pupils will also be having their say in the comments below:

Welcome back to all primary five pupils and teachers. We are now in full swing after our holiday and ready for all the challenges and opportunities ahead this year.

Our first challenge is to be thinking and learning about the conservation of our coasts and this year we are  hoping to work closely with the Marine Conservation Society and our Country Ranger in order to adopt the West Beach in North Berwick. Click here to find out even more….

Monet monet monet! May 18, 2009

Mrs Watson came back to P5B to do some art with us today. We are studying France just now so we were looking at the work of Claude Monet (1840-1926). He was born in Paris and is best known for his painting in the Impressionist era and particularly those painting of his beautiful garden in Giverny. Mrs Watson brought in some amazing objects for us to draw. Let’s see how many you can spot…

We painted black rectangles and squares onto large sheets of paper. Once they are dry they act just like blackboards so we were able to use white coloured pencils to sketch out our animals and flowers. We then named them in French! Can you guess what they mean? We then used chalk and coloured pencils to add the final touch of colour. I think 5B should be very proud. Mrs Watson though that they were fantastic.

Here are the children’s works of art in the making…

P5 Problem Solving at the Law! May 11, 2009

P5s were solving problems at the Law with our Countryside Ranger. We had to work in teams to get across a space using only boxes and planks of wood! He made it really difficult and challenging for us though. There was the 2 second rule where we only had 2 seconds to use the equipment otherwise he’d take them away from us! Each class had different tasks but each and every child was involved and challenged in one way or another. Great fun was had by all! (Well done and thank you to the parents who accompanied us!

Judo Champions! May 11, 2009

On Friday 8th May, Peter and Preeti Gardiner came to the Middle Area and Infant Assemblies to show the children some Judo moves. They asked for volunteers from the audience to try on the white jackets and showed them some of the basic Judo moves. It was then the chance for the children who go to Judo to show off some of their skills. We even had a Junior Scottish Bronze Champion amongst us! (Toby Boston in 5C!)

We were so impressed with the skills on show and there were many children so inspired by the assembly that they fancy giving a go themselves! Thank you so much for coming Peter and Preeti. It is always an honour to have you in school.

(Remember, NEVER try these moves at home or outside without mats. You need proper supervision by qualified instructors to carry out the moves.)

N.B Super Souvenirs Shop Open for business April 2, 2009

P5A have been planning, designing, making, pricing and packaging souvenirs for a class shop as part of our North Berwick topic. They will explain what they made and how much they are charging for their product. Other classes will be invited to come and do some “window shopping”, choosing the things they would buy with £10.00 (pretend money). Then a group will work out which were the most popular products and why. But Well Done to all the pupils who used their imaginations to come up with some super ideas.

Primary 5 are exploring their local area as part of their North Berwick topic and the outcome of their research will be creating trails/ maps around North Berwick.  They will include their favourite places to visit  and have been creating versions using ICT . They used a Google resource and this was really successful. Have a look at their work and the Google activity is included for your information.

Pop-up Exhibition at the Scottish Seabird Centre March 7, 2009

P5 got another chance to show off their ‘Conservation of the Coast’ pop-up books to the public this weekend. All the children were there from 2pm to around 4pm with their parents to show the general public not only their books but how to make them too! Sandra Vick even had some examples of her book ready to show us all. It is amazing to see all your ideas and artwork there in the flesh. I cannot wait to see the real thing! Well done for all your efforts. No sign of Neil Oliver today! Thank you to all the parents and visitors who came to see the exhibition.

They are doing this as part of their John Muir Award. Check out this link for more information.
