Friday 30th of May 2008 the p5s hosted a French Breakfast for our French Project. We invited our parents and had a lot of fun. Our parents enjoyed the food. There were croissants, crepes, pains au chocolat, jam, juice and cheese. Our parents also looked at all our work on the France project and chatted with other parents and relatives. They arrived at 9:30 and they left at 10:25. Check out our podcast.

Our French friends are on their way! They arrived in Scotland a few days ago and are coming to visit us tomorrow. They are hoping to arrive at 10am and spend the morning and lunch with the P5s. They have to leave at 1.45pm to get their ferry all the way back to France. We are looking forward to learning from them and teaching them a few things about Scotland as well.

This Friday, the 30th May, we are inviting guests to a French Breakfast in the Middle Area. There will be croissants, pain au chocolat and more galore!

On the 15th of May we went to the lodge as part of our John Muir Award.
When we got there, there were 3 Rangers, Laura, Tara, Caroline and Alex who is the Lodge Warden. They were going to teach us about trees and the animals that live in them for instance birds, squirrels, bats, owls, and also the animals that live around them for instance badgers, foxes, rabbits and hares.

We also learnt about the trees and there are lots of different trees at the Lodge. e.g. beech, horse chestnut, holly, oak, sycamore and birch.

Here some photos of our trip:

The Middle Area pupils are all getting excited in the run up to Christmas. In P5, we’ve been writing stories called ‘Waiting for Santa’. We read a few stories and poems about the anticipation of Christmas and decided to write our own!

Here is 5Bs classroom. Doesn’t it look festive?!

Stockings and winter clothes

The children put up this display of their fancy stockings and decorated the tree all by themselves! Can you spot the children all warm for the winter? We added shiny material to make sure they could be seen in the dark. We have been talking about reflective materials in our Light and Sound topic.

Christmas Tree

I hope the tree stays up this time!

We added strips of old black sugar paper on the window to make it look like an old fashioned window. We then added special spray to add an illusion of fallen snow! Do you like it?

Shadows and reflection December 4, 2007

Primary 5C have been designing and creating shadow puppets. They used cardboard, paper fasteners, canes and scissors to create them. They will be testing them out soon to see how effective they’ve been. The rest of the P5s cannot wait to see them!

All the Primary 5s have been looking at light as part of their Light and Sound science topic. P5C have been looking at reflective materials. P5B have been dressing up a child for winter using different materials, as well as reflective/shiny material so that they ‘glow in the dark’! They’ve also been learning about shadow formation. Here’s some photos of the children researching shadows with the laptops and some of them used lamps and an object to investigate shadow formation.

“…when all through the house,

not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;”

One of the most famous Christmas poems in the world written by a New Yorker called Clement Clarke Moore.

P5B have been looking at the poem today and have really enjoyed it. Some of us even recognised it as it has been used many times in cartoons, songs and films since it was written on Christmas Eve in 1822. Moore read the poem to his wife and his 6 children on the night that he wrote it. Little did he know that it would become world famous, being translated into numerous languages. A family friend liked it so much they gave it to a New York newspaper ‘The Sentinel’ in 1823 and it was published! It did not have his name attached to it so it said that it was by an ‘anonymous’ poet.

P5B have been looking at this poem as they will be writing about the build up to Christmas when they write a story entitled ‘Waiting for Santa’. They have already got ideas from this famous poem to help them. Have you heard of the poem? Do you have a copy of it? If you have comments please let us know. Please follow the link above (’looking at the poem’) if you’d like to see the poem.

A ‘Rubbish’ assembly from 5A December 4, 2007

It was a rubbish assembly! Well…not really but it was all about how we need to be careful with our litter as well as how to be eco-friendly in and out of school. We learned all about the amazing things Law Primary have been doing in school to gain our Silver Award (which should hopefully arrive before Christmas, all things well) Thank you so much to P5A for their fantastic assembly. Even the P1s, P2s and P3s got to see it this Monday!
