We are using our 16 spelling words this week to do a short story on a theme we have decided with a partner. We will choose 8 words each and together we will share the work and our ideas to produce a whole story. We are really trying to use our words imaginatively and accurately. Hope you enjoy our work….

Haiku Poetry November 12, 2008

Posted by smacniven in : 2008-09, P5 , 22comments

In Reading Setting we have been learning about the different styles of poetry. Today we did Haiku. We are posting examples of our poems here for you to read.

A syllable is a part of a word pronounced as a unit.  It is usually made up of a vowel alone or a vowel with one or more consonants.  The word “Haiku” has two syllables:  Hai-ku; the word “introduction” has four syllables:  in-tro-duc-tion.

“Haiku” is a traditional form of Japanese poetry.  Haiku poems consist of 3 lines.  The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables.  The lines rarely rhyme.

Here’s a Haiku to help you remember:

I am first with five
Then seven in the middle –
Five again to end.

Because Haikus are such short poems, they are usually written about things that are recognizable to the reader.  Nature, animals and seasons are examples of recognisable topics. Click on the link below to help you:

Green and speckled legs,
Hop on logs and lily pads
Splash in cool water

What am I

A Day in the Life of a Sea Creature November 12, 2008

Posted by smacniven in : 2008-09, Writing , 43comments

Primary 5 have been using what they have learned about sea creatures and the problem of depleting rockpools at their local beach to imagine and write about what it must be like from the sea creatures point of view. They have really used their imaginations and will share their best paragraphs here. Let us know what you think.

John Muir Award November 12, 2008

Posted by smacniven in : 2008-09, Achievements , 1 comment so far

Primary five are in full swing towards achieving their John Muir Award. In order to do this they have to DISCOVER and EXPLORE a wild place - we are focusing on our wonderful local beach. They are also reuqired to address issues of CONSERVATION so are learning about the depleting rockpools in North Berwick. Finally they plan to SHARE all of they have learned.

We are working closely  with the local Seabird Centre and a local artist Sandra Vick in order to plan, design and be involved in the printing or publication of a book on these issues. We also plan to share our ideas and books on the weblog and through podcasts.

On the 11th of November Emily from the Seabird Centre, Sandra the artist and lots of P5 parents came in to talk to and work with us on this process. Thanks everyone!

We are all very excited about this indeed. Click on the link above to find out more.

Well you have had a good practise at making different styles of pop up. So now you can use your imaginations and the skills you have learned to produce something of your own with a Seashore/coast or conservation theme. Good Luck and we look forward to sharing your end results. Here is a link to help you if you get stuck.    pop-up-books

Shapeshifters! November 6, 2008

Posted by Miss Boyd in : 2008-09, Maths, P5 , 8comments

Miss Boyd’s P5 maths set have been going shape crazy over the last few days. They have been learning all about 3D shapes. They now know how many faces and edges they’ve got AND how many corners too (we call them vertices though!). They then made some 3D shapes out of construct-o-straws. Look at the fabulous shapes they managed to make! Can you spot the CUBE? CUBOID? TRIANGULAR PYRAMID (that’s our newest one)? TRIANGULAR PRISM? Some of them even made OCTAGONAL PRISMS without even realising what they were called!!

Paraig the Storyteller fae Perthshire November 6, 2008

Paraig in the Highlands

The primary 5s had a very special visitor today. Paraig MacNeil came to tell us some Scottish Folk Tales and even taught us some songs in Norweigan and in Scots. We heard a tale about the Selkies, who were seal folk, and a tale about a nasty king who thought his joker (or jester) was foolish…little did he know that HE was the real fool. Our task was to retell one of the stories Paraig told us to a P4 and/or to our families when we got home, so… How did we do?
