Posted by smacniven in : 2008-09, Events , trackback

On Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd October, all primary 5 pupils are going to visit the lifeboat station in North Berwick. The pupils have thought about lots of questions they would like to ask and hope to be able to interview the crew on the day. They will let you know how they got here by telling us 3 things they learned during the visit.

I learned
1.That lifeboats have a sat-nav in them.

2.That the crew have at max 15mins from when they get the call to when they have to get the boat on the water.

3.That the lifeboat crew have a classroom where they learn just like us!

2. Rosie G 5A - October 1, 2008

Today we went to the RNLI and it was great. The class got split up in two groups. First I went and learned about the lifeguards suits and then we went up the spiral stairs. We watched a video about life guards for all the lifeguards when they were training. Then we went across the road and saw the lifeboat and tractor. We learned where all the things go on the lifeboat. They let us go in the tractor and the lifeboat. I only went in the tractor beacuse there wasn’t any time left for me to go in it.
TODAY WAS GREAT!

3. Rachel Jackson 5a - October 1, 2008

THIS IS WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE RNLI VIST.

We learned that North Berwick’s lifeboat is made out of rubber and its number is D-619. It is not a big wooden boat.

You wear a warm layer then a waterproof layer, gloves, a helmet with
a visor and most importantly a lifejacket.

You can join with a form signed by both parents at age16 but with out a form at 17 or 18.

I have learned that you should always wear a life-jacket. I’ve also learned that a tractor pulls the lifeboat in the sea. I have also learned not to go too far away from the beach.

5. Matthew 5A - October 1, 2008

At the Lifeboat Station we went to the Crew’s changing rooms and learned about their kit.

When we were looking at the lifeboat we learned that it had a first aid kit, a huge engine and a parachute.

Did you know that all the RNLI crew are volunteers?

6. James Chalmers P5A - October 1, 2008

P5A and b went to the RNLI today I learned lots of new things.Like North Berwick have the first Blue Peter lifeboat in Scotland. Everybody who joins the Lifeboat crew has to go through 5days of 12 hours training before they can go out on a rescue mission. The Blue Peter boat goes at 30 miles per hour, so the crew have to wear lots of waterproof clothing to keep warm and a helmet so no salt water gets in there thier eyes.

7. Noah Poole - October 1, 2008

RNLI
Today we went to the RNLI place and learned about lots of things. We looked at the rib and I learned that the rib had two anchors one like a massive parachute and the other one was like a normal sand anchor. I saw a video about lifeboat men and my Uncle Brian was on it. You have to be 17 to join the lifeboat team. You have to be very brave to join the lifeboat team.

8. Jonathan Harding 5A - October 1, 2008

RNLI

Today 5A and5B went down to the RNLI staition in North Berwick.

3. I learned that the boats go at 30 miles per hour.

4. I learned that it take 5 days to train a person.

These are a few things I learned at the RNLI

1.I found out that we were the first people in Scotland to get a Blue Peter boat.

2.They got a tractor one year ago for taking out the life boat.

3.It takes 14 minutes to get the lifejacket, helmet and a suit to keep them warm on.

This afternoon primary 5a went to the RNLI life boat centre we had a chance to learn how the boats work and how the lifegaurds got ready for an emergancy. we got to see lots of pictures of the onlden day boats and in these boats there were no engenens it was just oars.I really enjoye this trip and i hope i get to go again.

14. Robbie 5A - October 1, 2008

CLASS 5A VISIT TO THE RNLI

The visit was great because I learned that the rib goes 30mph . A rib is a small speed boat and is made of rubber.I also learned that you have to be 17 and over to get a job as a RNLI person. We also had to split into 2 groups, one of the groups went to the boat house with the rib and tractor and the other went to the changing rooms. You have to be as brave as a fireman! All of P5A enjoyed the trip to the RNLI it was GREAT!

15. Eilidh Johnston P5A - October 1, 2008

When P5A went to the RNLI visit we learned lots of things. We learnt that the rib goes 30mph and that you have to be 17 and over to join. The people who volunteer have another job and they have a beeper thing. If it beeps you have to run or drive as fast as you can to the lifeboat station (but not over the speed limit if you are driving!). The best thing I enjoyed about the visit was when we got to watch a video about what the RNLI do. I would like to be a lifeboat person when I am 17 because it sounds exciting.

16. (Jack Sibbald) (5a) - October 1, 2008

We went to the RNLI today and it was great fun.

these are the things i learned:

1)We were the first people in Scotland to get a boat.

i really liked the vist because i leanerd about the RNLI they people who save peoples lives if they are in trouble in the sea. We went into two different groups group one amd two. My group my leanerd about what they wear and we watched a video about the RNLI saving people lives. Then we went into the bit where they keep the life boat there was a person there as well. He though us about the life boat and what happends when the boat breaks down.

18. Euan Wilson 5b - October 1, 2008

1) The RNLI in North Berwick has the only lifeboat with a Blue Peter badge in Scotland.

2) They have a dummy to practise medical things on.

3) There is more than one type of boat that the RNLI use. The boat at North Berwick is an inshore lifeboat.

19. Andrew Marwick 5a - October 1, 2008

I learned that if you are at the coast and you see someone in the sea needing help you call 999 and ask for the coast guard.

Always wear a lifejacket if you go on a boat.

When you train to be a lifeboat crew member you have to have five days of training.

20. Alison 5a - October 1, 2008

Rnli visit
I learned that the crew only get 14 minutes to get ready and get the boat out.I think you have to be very brave to work there and not be afraid of the water. It is very important that you have a life jacket when you are on the boat. The suit has to protect all of your body here is what they wear: Woolly bear and dry suit and helmet and life jacket.

The boat was really cool because it was very small but it can fit 15 people in it and it carries lots of stuff as well.

thats what I liked about it

22. Rowan 5A - October 1, 2008

What I liked about the RNLI

1. I learnt that the lifeboat in North Berwick is a blue peter one!! (given by them)AND the only one in Scotland!

2. If you want to be a lifeboat rescue squad you have to train 5 days and from 7:00am-7:00pm!! (12 hours)

3. Our/NB’s boat can only go out in certain wind/weather conditions becase it is small and rubber. But NB has backup, for Dunbar has a much bigger lifebot and it is harder material so they can come in handy.
These are the new things I learnt on 1st Oct.

23. Christy P5B - October 1, 2008

Today at our visit to the Lifeboat Shed I learned…..

It takes 6 minutes to get into the special suits and luanch the boat.

It’s difficult holding on when the sea is very wavy.

The life jackets are really, really heavy to put on.

I really enjoyed the visit especially getting to know where all the different parts are on the boat.

24. Rachel 5B October 1, 2008 - October 1, 2008

I now know what RNLI stands for and I hope I don’t forget.

When they are cold, they have a shower with their clothes on.

They have had to go out knowing that the people they were trying to save had already drowned. This must be sad for them.

25. Joel5a - October 1, 2008

These are the things that 5A did at the RNLI

We got to see the suits, there was the bear suit, the dry suit and the life jacket. Then we went into there classroom where they learnt how to be lifeguards, there was also a kitchen next to it.When we went to the boat there was a tractor there that towed in and out of the water, the hole trip was fantastic.

THE END

3.i also learned that the North Berwick lifeboat can only go out on certain weathers but the Dunbar one could come instead if it is too windy.

28. Ruairidh Scott - October 1, 2008

I liked the life boat tractor. The life boat we saw was the last Blue Peter boat in the world. I also liked the music/beat that played with the video. The video was interesting too. The wet suits were attached to the wellies. Amazing!

29. Duncan 5B - October 1, 2008
