Eco-School

Eco Newsletter Last session Law Primary elected members to join the Eco-Committee.  The committee have been meeting once a month to discuss eco-related issues and have been given the responsibility of reporting back to classes and assemblies.  We have been working on many different projects around the school including paper recycling and gardening and we have lots more planned for the coming terms!

Sensory Garden

About a year and a half ago primary 5 took on the challenge of resurrecting the Sensory Garden outside the Middle Area.  The Eco-Committee and other keen gardeners in Law Primary are now continuing the good work of this year group, to help fulfil all the original plans for the garden.  Two members of our Eco-Committee have just written to the PTA to ask if it would be possible to help with some funding for a water feature and some new bedding plants.  We are waiting on a reply from them, however, we remain hopeful that they will be able to help us!

Composting

Last session we sourced a mini compost bin for each class to keep our fruit peelings and cores separate for composting in the garden area.  This worked very well in the beginning and encouraged the children to be more waste-aware.  The fruit peelings and dry materials did, however, take a long time to break down, which then caused us some problems as we were unable to use the compost how we had intended. This year we hope to compost our fruit peelings again, although not on such a large scale.  We hope to set up a rota after the October holidays to allow each year group to have their turn at some point during the year.  More details will follow.

Paper Recycling

The whole school is involved in paper recycling.  Every class has a white bag in their classroom for used paper.  This is recycled on a Friday morning and the bags are returned by the Monday to use again.  Some classes have set up a rota to take their bag to the janitor and some classes have decided that their Eco-Representative will be responsible for this.  This is continuing to operate smoothly and is raising awareness of just how much paper we actually do waste!

Pledges

Every year group has discussed things that they would like to do this year to help the environment.  Pledges have been written down and given to the Eco-Committee so that they can be displayed on the notice board.  Many classes have pledged to continue some of the good work that they are already doing, whilst others have set themselves new challenges.  Good luck with these!

Poster Competition

The Eco-Committee have organised a poster competition, which aims to raise awareness of some very important issues.  The themes were Keeping Healthy, Saving Energy and Waste Minimisation.  A winner from each class will be chosen before the October break and prizes will be given out at assemblies.  Winning entries will be laminated and displayed at prominent areas around the school.  We hope that these posters will send out a clear message to everyone at Law Primary.

Bronze Award

The Eco-Committee have just applied for their Bronze Award which demonstrates that they are well on the way to making Law Primary a more eco-friendly place to learn.  We expect to receive this very soon. We hope that you have found this useful.  Please continue to reduce, reuse and recycle!
