Signing off..

It’s holiday time! The whiteboard and ActiVote proved useful til the end. One of my classes made up maths quiz for themselves - they each made up a question and 5 possible answers, then we ran through them using the voting pads to record answers. I had some very creative questions, [...]

I just wanted to quote from Spiderman!
Activote continues to delight me. But I should mention something that David Gilmour commented about: Activote can be misused dreadfully. One could put up on screen the results of every pupil with their names after every vote. One could display lesson summaries of each [...]

Blown Away by ActiVote!

The title says it all. Today I was teaching a lesson on fractions with my new S3 credit class of 30 pupils. They have all covered how to do arithmetic with fractions before, but we always have a quick reminder at the start of S3, because it is so important.
I started the lesson [...]

The marvellous Alan Halliburton from IT came in this morning and got ActivSlate and Activote up and running in my room. Cheers Alan! I'm working to have some questions ready for my numeracy lesson with S2 this afternoon.

More Collaboration

This morning, I set up a simple mailing list for all maths teachers in East Lothian to share handy hints on how to make the most of our new whiteboards. I mailed a couple of hints about customising the toolboxes. Later on, I read Ollie's comment about setting up a wiki. This is a good [...]

Today I played the numbers game from countdown with a class in the last 10 minutes of a lesson. Previously, I had either done it by hand, or used a graphic calculator OHP device. Now I can use a bit of freeware that puts up a full colour imitation of what you would see on [...]

Working Together

I was playing around with the settings in Activstudio, and realised that the "shared library" was on my desktop machine. After a few minutes of fiddling and discussion with the rest of the department, we now have an ActivStudio folder in our departmental shared folder which we have all linked to as our shared [...]

Baby Steps

After only three days with the board, I am already feeling at home with it, and appreciating the little ways in which it improves the classroom. I remember a speaker at SETT a few years ago talking about how users of new technology begin by doing the same things they used to do using the [...]

In at the Deep End

All this week, Promethean and FES staff have been busy in the maths departments of ELC high schools installing Promethean whiteboards and associated projectors. They finished here at North Berwick yesterday afternoon, having done a thoroughly professional job.

And so… this morning arrived, and I found myself at the front of a class of 32 [...]
