Head Teacher role at Humbie March 11, 2010

Ok, in response to several rumours and my recent conversation with Mrs Laing i thought i should drop this blog to give out some information to share with all at Humbie.

I was contacted by the Parent Council Chair of Saltoun Primary recently, she wanted to give me the ‘heads up’ (no pun intended) on what is happening at Saltoun as they search for a new Head Teacher and how this might impact on Humbie as she had become aware that Mrs Laign was to be moving on.

To take you back a little, Saltoun have been looking for a Head since before Christmas and during this process East Lothian Council approached them with the idea of a Head Share (at that stage there were no other schools to share a Head with!) and asked them to gather parental opinion which they duly did. The response was more a series of questions about how this might work rather than an outright ‘no way’. East Lothian Edu. then took the proposal to Committee and at this stage the Councillors responded to the proposal by telling the Edu Dept that there wasn’t enough info upon which to make a decision and essentially dismissed the proposal. In response EL Edu Dept then went back to Saltoun and confirmed that they should move ahead with seeking a Head on the basis of sole Head at Saltoun. The process of applications, drawing up of long leets etc had been completed and Saltoun were to conduct the interviews a week or so ago until, at the last minute, EL Edu Dept rang and told them the interviews were to be postponed and that the notion of a shared Head was again on the agenda, primarily in light of the change in situation at Humbie. Saltoun were informed that a fresh proposal was to be taken to Committee on the 16th March and that after this date the Dept would know further how both Saltoun and Humbie would proceed with seeking respective candidates to fill the positions available.

So, until the Committee sits and decides we will not know whether Humbie and Saltoun Will have to look at a joint head ship.

Joint headship is in no way a combination of the two schools physically although it would bring about undoubted shared ideas, benefits of perhaps increasing shared practices, shared events such as go on already (sports day, various singing events, Christmas events etc). When we first took Toby to nursery Betty Irvine was thejoint head of both schools so until recently this already happened in practice. When Betty retired it was considered that the post be split back to single heads at each school.

As i am sure you all are aware there are significant strains on the national and local Educational budget although East Lothian has actually managed to protect and enhance the budget for Education for 2010 - 2011. In light of these strains it perhaps comes as no surprise to hear that EL Edu Dept are looking at ways of saving, and a joint head role is a very obvious way to achieve this.

Finally, i have been contacted by another local primary Parent Council chair with a view to sharing information about the whole joint head idea and i will keep you posted.

I guess we will know more following the meeting on the 16th but for now i can assure you that i know of no plans to merge schools, to close schools or anything of the like - you only need to go to Don Ledinghams blog or to hear him talk at the ELAPC meetings to hear how passionate he is about our children’s education to believe that the last thing on his mind is to put schools at risk.

Hope this helps but do give me a call or reply or catch me at school if there is anything else i can add.
