1. Grace Gray - I was Grace McNab then. - June 6, 2008

Has anyone any photos, information, knowledge of the evacuees from Edinburgh who arrived at Humbie on 1st September, 1939?
Miss Cockburn was the Headmistress of the school in these days.
We stayed at Humbie House for a year or so and then we were transferred to Pogbie House, Pogbie and attended Preston Pans Secondary School.
Thank you.

Have a look!

Dear Humbie Community Organisations!

If any of the organisations with a sub page on the Humbie EduBuzz blog want/need a hand setting up and getting started (over and above what Mrs. Stratton and the pupils are doing), I’d be more than glad to help!

Do get in touch and come by for a session here (I’m not mobile, but I do have ADSL broadband and am acquiring some knowledge of blogging and coding - oh and I make a fierce cup of coffee ;-) ) I’d also be happy if you just want to bring your news/events to me and I’ll post them on your behalf.

Cheers,
Eliza

Thanks Eliza. I hope people take you up on your kind offer.

Kind regards
Mhairi

5. Eliza Sparks - August 21, 2008

Thanks, Mhairi! Hope so, too - with my spine being what it is, the internet has become invaluable tool for those of us who live in rural settings. I shop, research, communicate, debate, save money, bank, etc. online and would be very glad to pass on my experience! :-)

All the best,
Eliza

Dear Mrs. Gray,

First of all, apologies for how slow I’ve been to respond, and, secondly, do forgive me if I post anything you’ve already investigated. I’ve just spent a fascinating hour looking online at historical / genealogical records on Humbie (thank you!). I’m a Humbie newbie, having just moved here in December 2001. However, I’m a bit of an old hand at research…. Anyhow, I’ll try to be brief (not my strong point!), as there is a lot of information.

With reference to Grace Gray (n. McNab) and childhood experiences of evacuation, I’ve just found:

“A Scottish Child’s View of WW2″

“Childhood memories of Portobello, Edinburgh”

“Evacuated from Edinburgh to The Craigs”

I missed this over the summer…. Just in case anyone else did, too:

Chipping in with a bumper crop
Thursday, 10th July, 2008 07:55

“GREEN-FINGERED pupils at East Lothian’s smallest school harvested a bumper crop of potatoes before heading off on their summer holidays.

“As part of The Royal Highland Educational Trust’s ‘Count and Grow’ scheme, P1-3 pupils at Humbie Primary School planted the spuds in the school’s veg garden in February and spent the last four months nurturing their crop. [...]“

Hiyas, everyone!

I’d like to ask for the community’s help with the Humbie After School Care Club/Humbie Primary project: “Taking Care: Our Environment, Ourselves”.

We’re currently trying to source plants (herbs, houseplants, woodland bulbs, triple/quad fruit trees) and if you have any surplus to your needs, we’d be very grateful to receive these! To date, we’ve received plants from 2 local people, a lady in Haddington and another in East Linton! (HUGE thank you for their generosity!!) We’re hoping to get donations from local nurseries &/or garden centres, too - particularly of the more unusual plants.

Last year, the children met with Dr. Brian Moffat at Sutra Aisle Hospital. Dr. Moffat is an absolutely fascinating expert (archaeobotanist, I believe) on mediaeval herbology! He speaks 2 x a year at the Aisle and it’s a great day out - providing it’s not blowing a gale….

Many, many thanks,

Eliza Sparks
email: eksparks2@yahoo.co.uk

UPDATE (12sep08): We’ve now received plants from 4 people (the 2 East Lothian residents mentioned) and 2 Humbie area residents! The rough totals are: approx. 40 herbs (8 species) and 18 houseplants (6 species)! Thank you everyone! More are on their way, too.

Mrs. Grace Gray shares with us her memories of being a child evacuee to Humbie!

WORLD WAR II EVACUEES
I am an octogenarian but I can remember the following. I was evacuated from my home (Edinburgh, Scotland) during WWII. The British Government advised parents to send young children to the country in the hope that they would survive, if War were declared. I left my hometown from Bruntsfield School by bus on Friday, 1st September 1939. War was declared on Sunday, 3rd September 1939.

Found a title online that could be very interesting to the kids studying WWII:

War and peace 1940 to 1990: Some changes in the parishes of Cranstoun, Crichton, Fala and Soutra, and Humbie

Fala, Soutra & District History & Heritage Society, 1991.

Good morning, all! :-)

I’ve recently been in touch with the Haddington Fire Station to arrange a FREE Home Safety Check. This is available to everyone. As winter approaches (all too quickly!), I’ll be lighting more candles, using the open fire and when Christmas arrives (eek!) there will be even greater demands on electric outlets (fairylights) and additional sources of flammable materials (wrapping paper). So, I invite you to look at MAKING YOUR HOME SAFER, a leaflet produced by the Lothian and Borders Fire Rescue Service (reproduced with permission).

Industrial Action Planned for Wednesday 24th September 2008

From the East Lothian Council website:

“As you may be aware, industrial action is planned for Wednesday 24th September 2008. As the strike may be cancelled at short notice, if you have a collection due on this date please leave your container(s) at their normal collection point. However, should the industrial action go ahead:”
