Edubuzz blogs move home

Moving house

The edubuzz blog system has now moved home, and the service is back. Basic tests have been successful, but if you notice anything wrong, please get in touch or leave a comment.

The changeover meant taking the system down from last thing yesterday until earlier today. Apologies if that caused you any inconvenience.

The new place has much more storage capacity, and more memory. The move was necessary for two reasons. First, performance: the server was becoming overloaded during morning and afternoon peak periods. That was down to lack of memory. Secondly, free storage capacity for uploaded files was becoming low.

This is the second time we’ve tried to make this change. Our first attempt, using a well-know hosting company, had to be abandoned after endless delays over getting appropriate server access. The support service was so poor that we became unwilling to get into the situation where we were relying on it. In particular, it wasn’t possible to talk directly to knowledgeable staff. All calls were routed via a call centre where long on-hold delays, complete with recorded adverts, were an everyday occurrence. They were relatively cheap, but this proved you get what you pay for.

We have now taken a larger server with Donhost, who originally didn’t have one big enough. They have proved to be an excellent company for our purposes. The service is reliable, and phones usually get answered immediately by helpful and knowledgeable staff. Unusually these days there’s a complete absence of “You call is important to use” messages!
