- 4-11 February 1945 = Yalta Summit Meeting
- Stalin (USSR President), Roosevelt (USA President) and Chruchill (UK Prime Minister) were present
- Stalin wanted huge reparations from Germany.
- Roosevelt and Churchill did not think it wise to punish Germany so severly.
- Stalin recieved factory equipment and materials from Germany.
- Some of the other decisions that came out of Yalta were;
- Germany would be demilitarised and divided into 4 zones, each controlled by one of the Allied powers, the USSR, the USA, Britain and France.
- The city of Berlin would also be divided between the four powers.
- Eastern Europe should be under Soviet influence.
- The USSR gained land from eastern Poland
- In return, Poland recieved land from Germany.
- All countries freed from the Germans could choose their own democratic government in free elections.
- Stalin agreed to join the United Nations.
- The USSR would join the war agaisnt Japan.
- Potsdam Summit Meeting, 17th July - 1st August
- Stalin, Truman (USA President) and Attlee (UK Prime Minister) were present.
- At Potsdam the following was decided;
- New boundaries were decided. (The Oder-Neisse river line formed the boundary between Poland and Germany
- Nazi Party was banned in Germany.
- USA Suspicion about Communism spreading from Russia
- Stalin believed that the USA wanted to destroy Communism.
- Stalin was angry over the lack of reparations Russia recieved at Yalta.
- Stalin promised to hold free elections in Poland.
- Russian Communists fought against Polish Nationalists in Poland.
- Non Communist partisans in Poland were arrested and jailed by the Russian ‘Red Army’
- Elections were not held in Poland until 1947 and they were not ‘free’.
- 142 non communist politicians had been locked up along with 100,000 members of the ‘Peoples Party’ (non communist party)
- Voters were fightened and threatened into voting communist at the election.
- A Communist government was now established in Poland.

Just a short reminder that the homework for Monaday is the following question,
“Who was to blame for the start of the Cold War?”
You should all have enough notes in your folders to help you answer the question successfully.
For those of you who have never done History before, can I suggest that when answering this type of question, you put in as much detail as possible and explain your answer fully with reason as to why you have give the answer you have.
